SomethingsIhavenoticedinChina!WilddrivingThisisanotherdifferenceIfoundduringmy1stvisit,whiletakingmyfirsttaxiride.Iwasshockedathowrudethetaxidriverwasbeing,swervinginandoutoflanes,cuttinginfrontofpeopleandevendrivinginbetweenlanesevengoingthewrongwaydownastreetwhenhemissedhisexit!However,afterlivinghereforamonthIhaverealisedthisiscompletelynormaldrivinginChina.Infact,becauseofalltheunpredictableswerving,itseemsdriversaremoreobservant,withquickerreactionsthanmostintheUK.TrafficLawsAreNotLawsinChinaE-bikes,silentanddeadly!Whenwalkingdownastreetyouareconfrontedwithbikestravellingathighspeednotcaringaboutthepeoplewalking.Anotherpointaboute-bikeswholefamilieswouldberidingtogether,evensmallbabieswouldbesleepingwithoutacareintheworldwith4otherfamilymembers!

Non-existentqueuingBeingBritish,Ihavehadqueuingmannerstaughtmefromaveryearlyage.Youcan’thelpbutbeirritatedifsomeonequeuejumps.InChina,however,queuingseemstobemorealongthelinesofapolitesuggestion.ManytimesIhavebeenqueuingforthecashdeskinasupermarketand,asitreachesmyturn,someonewalksinfrontofmeandplacestheiritemsonthedesk.Yousoonlearntobecomemorepushyandassertive,aswellasperhapsalittlemoreimpatient.

Althoughittrulyisadisgustingsound,itisnotconsideredrudehereandsolocalsdon’tevenbataneyelid.So,unfortunatelyyouwillhavetolearntolivewithit.SpittingThisoneisprobablytheworstChinesehabitI’veputupwithduringmystayhere,fortunatelyinbigcitiesitisnottoocommon.Howeveronceinawhile,whenhavingapeacefulwalkalongthestreets,youmaybestartledbyaveryloudsnortingsound,followedbysomeonespitting.
