areagreatmanyregionalandsocialvarietiesofthelanguageaswellasvariouslevelsof
usagethatareemployedbothinitsspokenandwrittenforms.
Infact,itisimpossibletoestimatethenumberofpeopleintheworldwhohaveacquired
anadequateworkingknowledgeofEnglishinadditiontotheirownlanguages.Thepurpose
forEnglishlearningandthesituationsinwhichsuchlearningtakesplacearesovariedthatit
isdifficulttoexplainandstillmoredifficulttojudgewhatformsanadequateworking
knowledgeforeachsituation.
ThemainreasonforthewidespreaddemandforEnglishisitspresent-dayimportanceas
aworldlanguage.Besidesservingtheindefiniteneedsofitsnativespeakers,Englishisa
languageinwhichsomeofimportantworksinscience,technology,andotherfieldsarebeing
produced,andnotalwaysbynativespeakers.ltiswidelyusedforsuchpurposesas
meteorologicalandairportcommunications,internationalconferences,andthespreadof
informationovertheradioandtelevisionnetworksofmanynations.ltisalanguageofwider
communicationforanumberofdevelopingcountries,especiallyformerBritish
colonies.Manyofthesecountrieshavemultilingualpopulationsandneedalanguagefor
internalcommunicationinsuchmattersasgovernment,commerce,industry,lawand
educationaswellasforinternationalcommunicationandforentrancetothescientificand
technologicaldevelopment
