flockbelievedtobe1milewideand320miles(about515kilometers)longwasseennearCincinnati.

Sadlytheabundanceofpassengerpigeonsmayhavebeentheirundoing.Wherethebirdsweremost

abundant,peoplebelievedtherewasanever-lastingsupplyandkilledthembythethousands.Commercial

huntersattractedthemtosmallclearingswithgrain,waiteduntilpigeonshadsettledtofeed,thenthrewlargenets

overthem,takinghundredsatatime.Thebirdswereshippedtolargecitiesandsoldinrestaurants.

Bytheclosingdecadesofthe19thcentury,thehardwoodforestswherepassengerpigeonsnestedhadbeen

damagedbyAmericanJsneedforwood,whichscattered(驱散)theflocksandforcedthebirdstogofarther

north,wherecoldtemperaturesandstormscontributedtotheirdecline.Soonthegreatflocksweregone,never

tobeseenagain.

In1897,thestateofMichiganpassedalawprohibitingthekillingofpassengerpigeonsbutbythen,no

sizableflockshadbeenseeninthestatefor10years.ThelastconfirmedwildpigeonintheUnitedStateswas

shotbyaboyinPikeCounty,Ohio,in1900.Foratime,afewbirdssurvivedunderhumancare.Thelast

ofthem,knownaffectionatelyasMartha,diedattheCincinnatiZoologicalGardenonSeptember1,1914.
