SocialWelfare

Publicassistanceprograms,commonlycalled“welfare”,providecashor

in-kindbenefitsforparticularcategoriesofthefinanciallyneedy.TheUS

welfaresystemoperatesonboththefederalandstatelevels.Thefederalwelfare

programisknownasSocialSecurity,whichprovidesbenefitsorassistancefor

childcare,disability,foodstampandmedicalassistance.

individualsandlocalcommunitieswithstateschoolingandsocialinsurance.US

facteffectivelyplacetheresponsibilityformaintainingfundinglevelsonthe

states一and,insomecases,onthelargercities.Theresulthasbeenawideningof

thealreadyexistingdisparitiesinsocialservicesspendingbetweenstates,and

betweencitiesandregionswithinastate.
