摘要 形合和意合问题是国内英语语言学界和翻译界一个老生常谈的 话题，这方面的研究难以统计，似乎没有必要进行进一步的讨论。但 事实是，到目前为止，语言学者对于什么是“形合”、什么是“意合”， 至今没有一个明确的认识，所以，还存在不少的分歧。本文在总结前 人论述的基础上，明确指出，汉语中所说的“形合、意合”这一对概念 不能等同于英语中的h y p o t a x i s 和p a r a t a x i s 概念。在此基础上，本文 详细描述英、汉语在不同层面上形合、意合的不同倾向，并强调这个 倾向性差异应该在翻译中得到体现，但形合、意合作为两种语言成分 的组织手段，并非此有彼无的关系，所以，翻译时还应考虑影响形合、 意合手段使用的不同因素，特别是语用因素。 本文的主要内容包括： 1 汉语中的“形合、意合”概念，不等同于英语中的h y p o t a x i s 和 p a r a t a x i s 概念。汉语中的“形合、意合”作为连接手段，能作用于不同 的语言层面，也不管所连接的成分是并列关系还是从属关系，而英语 中的h y p o t a x i s 仅指通过连接性词语表示的从属关系( 或结构) ，一般 表示分句间的连接，但也可包括词语间的连接，而p a r a t a x i s 则指语 言成分不通过连接性词语而并列在一起，但语义上不限于表示并列关 系，也可表示从属关系，但以表示并列关系为主。， 2 在体现语法意义和连接语言成分的方式方面，英、汉语存在 显著差异，即汉语倾向于使用意合的手段而英语则倾向于使用形合的 手段。具体表现在： 在词法层面上，在汉语中，与动词、名词、形容词n 词等有关 的语法意义，一般主要隐含在上下文里，而没有显性的形式来表示， 但有时也须使用词汇的手段来表示，而同样的意义在英语中一般都通 过形态的显性变化来表示。 在句法成分的组织层面，汉语句子中成分与成分之间的语法关系 和所表示的语义关系，一般也都隐含在上下文中，而不是通过显性的 方式来明示，一是因为汉语相对缺乏显性的连接方式，二是即使有， 汉语也习惯于使用意合的连接手段。而英语中旬予成分之间的语法关 系和语义关系，常通过显性的方式来加以体现，这是因为英语中有很 多表示并列关系和从属关系的连接性成分。 在篇章层面，汉语与英语之间也存在同样的差异，也就是，汉语 中旬子与句子之间的逻辑关系，主要隐含在上下文中，而英语中则一 般倾向于通过显性的衔接性成分来表示。 3 在英汉互译过程中，应在不同层面体现汉语意合、英语形合 的这个倾向性差异，但形合、意合不是两种对立的连接手段，在具体 翻译过程中，译者在体现汉语和英语的这个倾向性差异的同时，还必 须同时考虑影响形合、意合手段使用的各种语用因素。 本文共分成五章。第乒章是文献综述，概括介绍了国内外有关学 者对“形合”、“意合”的研究，并对其中的观点作简要评述，并在此基础 上提出了本文的写作目的。第二章通过对相关的论述进行对比分析， 说明汉语的“形合”、“意合”不等于英语的h y p o t a x i s 和p a r a t a x i s ，从 有关论述中寻找“形合”、“意合”最合适的定义。第三章根据定义对英
