ScottFitzgerald,bornonSeptember24,1896,anAmericannovelist,wasonceastudentofSt.

PaulAcademy,theNewmanSchoolandattendedPrincetonUniversityforashortwhile.In1917

hejoinedthearmyandwaspostedinAlabama,wherehemethisfuturewifeZeldaSayre.Then

hehadtomakesomemoneytoimpressher.

Hislifewithherwasfullofgreathappiness,ashewroteinhisdiary,“Myownhappinessin

walkitawayinquietstreetsandtakedownpartsofitinmydiary.”

ThisSideofParadise,hisfirstnovel,waspublishedin1920.Encouragedbyitssuccess,

Fitzgeraldbegantodevotemoretimetohiswriting.Thenhecontinuedwiththenovelthe

BeautifulandDamned(1922),acollectionofshortstoriesThalesoftheJazzAge(1922),anda

playTheVegetable(1923).ButhisgreatestsuccesswasthenovelTheGreatGatsby,published

in1925,whichquickbroughthimpraisefromtheliteraryworld.Yetitfailedtogivehimthe

neededfinancialsecurity.Then,in1926,hepublishedanothercollectionofshortstoriesAllthe

SadYoungMen.

However,Fitzgerald'sproblemswithhiswifeZeldahadaneffectonhiswriting.Duringthe

1920shetriedtoreorderhislife,butfailed.By1930,hiswifehadherfirstbreakdownandwent

toaSwissclinic.DuringthisperiodhecompletednovelsTenderIstheNightin1934andThe
