Step1:Willingnesstodosomethingdifferent.

Efficiencyisalsoagreatwaytolowercarbonemissionsandhelpslowglobal

warming.Butthebestargumentforefficiencyisitscost-or,moreprecisely,its

profitability.That'sbecausequicklygrowingenergydemandrequiresimmense

investmentinnewsupply,nottomentionthedrainofrisingenergyprices.

Nowonderefficiencyhasmovedtothetopofthepoliticalagenda.OnJan.10,

theEuropeanUnionunveiledaplantocutenergyuseacrossthecontinentby20

percentby2020.LastMarch,Chinaimposeda20percentincreaseinenergy

efficiencyby2020.EvenGeorgeW.Bush,theTexasoilman,isexpectedtotalkabout

energyconservationinhisStateoftheUnionspeechthisweek.

Thegoodnewsisthattheworldisfullofproven,cheapwaystosaveenergy.

Herearetheseventhatcouldhavethebiggestimpact.

Insulate

Spaceheatingandcoolingeatsup36percentofalltheworld'senergy.There's

virtuallynolimittohowmuchofthatcanbesaved,asprototype"zero-energyhomes^^

inSwitzerlandandGermanyhaveshown.Therebeenasurgeinnewwaysof

keepingheatinandcoldout(orviceversa).Themostadvancedinsulationfollowsthe

lawofincreasingreturns:ifyouaddenoughyoucanscaledownoreveneliminate

heatingandair-conditioningequipment,loweringcostsevenbeforeyoustartsaving

onutilitybills.Studieshaveshownthatgreenworkplaces(onesthatdon'tconstantly

needtohavetheheatorair-conditionerrunning)havehigherworkerproductivityand

lowersickrates.

ChangeBulbs

Lightingeatsup20percentoftheworld'selectricity,ortheequivalentof

roughly600,000tonsofcoaladay.Fortypercentofthatpowersold-fashioned

incandescentlightbulbs—a19th-centurytechnologythatwastesmostofthepowerit

consumesonunwantedheat.

Compactfluorescentlamps,orCFLS,notonlyuse75to80percentless

Inthesummer,thesystemcanbereversedtocoolbuildingsaswell.

MostnewresidentialbuildingsinSwedenarealreadyheatedwithground-source

heatpumps.Suchsystemsconsumealmostnoconventionalfuelatall.Several
