LastyearmarkedthethirdyearinarowthatIndonesia'sbleakrateofdeforestation

hasslowedinpace.Onereasonfortheturnaroundmaybethecountry?santipovertyprogram.

In2007,Indonesiastartedphasinginaprogramthatgivesmoneytoitspoorestresidents

undercertainconditions,suchasrequiringpeopletokeepkidsinschoolorgetregularmedical

care.CalledconditionalcashtransfersorCCTs,thesesocialassistanceprogramsare

ButCCTprogramsdon'tgenerallyconsidereffectsontheenvironment.Infact,poverty

alleviationandenvironmentalprotectionareoftenviewedasconflictinggoals,saysPaulFerraro,

aneconomistatJohnsHopkinsUniversity.
