wasthebestreaderandspeaker.Therewasnoreasonformetobeinanyofthoseclasses.

WhenmyparentsdiscoveredthatIwasinthoseclassesinsteadofinregularclasseswithother

English-speakingstudents,theywenttotheschooladministrationtocomplainaboutthe

discrimination.Theschoolhadnothingtosay.MyparentstriedtogetmeoutoftheESLclasses,

buttheschoolfoughtveryhardtokeepmethere.Andthenwefoundoutwhy--foreverystudent

theschoolhadintheESLandLimitedEnglishProficiencyProgram,theywouldreceive$400.

Thiswasprettydevastating.Theschool'sonlyexcuseforkeepingmetherewasbecauseIlivedin

aSpanish-speakinghousehold,andthatIwasinfluencedbythewaymyparentsspoke.My

parentswereoutraged,butIremainedintheESLandLimitedEnglishProficiencyProgramuntilI

wasinthefifthgrade.

Thenmyparentstransferredmetoanotherschoolwheretheyhadfriends.Thenewschoolgave

meanEnglishproficiencytest.Iacedit.SoIdidn'thavetoattendthoseprogramsfornon-native

Englishspeakers.Iwasfinallyontherighttrackandbackattheheadoftheclass.Thefirstschool
