Arewejustasobsessedwithfameandfamouspeopleasweeverwere?Orhavetheeventsofthispastyearreallychangedourvaluesandgoals?Ifwereallyhavechanged,thatmightnotbesuchabadthing.Recentpsychologicalstudiesshowthatpeoplewhopursueextrinsic18goals--suchasfame,wealth,orpublicimage--tendtofeellesshappinessandalowersenseofwell-beingthanotherpeopledo.Havinganextrinsicgoalmeansbeingmotivatedbysomethingoutsideofyourself.Extrinsicgoalsareonlyreallyaccomplishedwhenotherpeopleacknowledgethemtobeaccomplished.Studiesshowthatevenpeoplewhoreachextrinsicgoals--achievingfameorwealth,forinstance--tendtobelesshappyintheirlivesthanpeoplewhosetintrinsic19goals.Anintrinsicgoalisamotivatingfactorthatisinsideyou,insteadofoutsideofyou.Peoplewhosetouttoachievepersonalgrowthortobuildbetterrelationshipswithfriendsorfamilyhavesetintrinsicgoals.Studiesshowthatsuchpeoplearemorelikelytobehappyandtofeelasenseofwell-beingthanarepeoplewhosetextrinsicgoals.Teenstendtohearalotabouttheneedto"setgoals"intheirlives.Butwhatifbysettingcertainkindsofgoals,youngpeoplereallyaresettingthemselvesupforfutureunhappiness?Whatkindsofgoalshaveyousetforyourself?Areyouplanningtospendyourlifechasingafterthefamegame?Ifwhatyoureallywantishappiness,maybeit'stimetochangeyourplans.
