BecausethelowlatitudesoftheEarth,theareasneartheequator,receivemoreheatthanthelatitudesnearthepoles,andbecausethenatureofheatistoexpandandmove,heatistransportedfromthetropicstothemiddleandhighlatitudes.Someofthisheatismovedbywindsandsomebyoceancurrents,andsomegetsstoredintheatmosphereintheformoflatentheat.Thetermlatentheatreferstotheenergythathastobeusedtoconvertliquidwatertowatervapor.Weknowthatifwewarmapanofwateronastove,itwillevaporate,orturnintovapor,fasterthanifitisallowedtositatroomtemperature.Wealsoknowthatifwehangwetclothesoutsideinthesummertimetheywilldryfasterthaninwinter,whentemperaturesarecolder.Theenergyusedinbothcasestochangeliquidwatertowatervaporissuppliedbyheat—suppliedbythestoveinthefirstcaseandbytheSuninthelattercase.Thisenergyisnotlost.Itisstoredinwatervaporintheatmosphereaslatentheat.Eventually,thewaterstoredasvaporintheatmospherewillcondensetoliquidagain,andtheenergywillbereleasedtotheatmosphere.
