DESIGNMEDIAPUBLISHINGHOSPITALSDESIGNMEDIAPUBLISHING筑网MyDesignExperienceEIhavebeendevotedmylifetomedicalarchitectureover35years.EThis“specialart”mustbeincorporatedwith“humanlife”tocreateworkswhichcombinehumanscaleandfunctions.Medicalarchitectureisan“organism”.Ashistoryaccumulates,societychangesandmedicalsciencedevelops,medicalarchitectureisgrowingupcontinuallyandreflectingdifferentera’srequirements.Workingdeeplyinthisarea,youhavetobeextremelyobservantandreflective,aswellasmaintainaselflessandpassionateIliketogetinvolvedwithsky,earthandhumanbeings,therefore,astronomy,Greekmythologyandmountain-climbinghavealwaysbeenmyinspirations.Theybroadenmyview,accumulatemyenergyofself-breakingandenhancingmyarchitecturaljudgmentandability.Intheprocessofworkingonmedicalarchitecture,“communication”playsanimportantrole,especiallywhentheobjectishospitalstaffwithselfishdepartmentalism.Once,anobstetricianrequiredthedeliveryroomtobelargeandseparatedbycurtains,whichwouldbeconvenientfordelivery.However,myexperienceand
judgmenttoldmethatitisnon-negotiable,evenonthescaleofuseranddesigner.Whenaparturientisexperiencingenormouslabourpain,youcanimagineshewouldbemorepanichearingotherparturients’crying.Theevolvementofmedicalarchitectureiscloselyconnectedwithenvironment.Foryearsofmypracticeinmedicalarchitecturedesign,Ihavemydemandingconcept.First,spacemustbeequippedwithflexibilitytomatchtheincreasingnumberofpatients,asthelandresourceislimitedandwehavetouseitproperly.Second,thehospitalhastocontain“competitiveedge”,suchasmedicaltechnology,reasonablecirculationandprofessionalresourcesharing,inordertoguidethepatientseasily.Inadditionofgreenfeaturesandenergystrategy,thehospitalwillbecompetitive.Third,thehospitalneedtobehumane.Combininghumanscalesandinnovationsandstartingfrompracticalapplication,thehospitalwillmakepatientsfeelintimacy,relaxingandconfidence.Forexample,thehospitalshouldtakecareofculturalspaceofthepublicarea,payattentiontopatients’spiritualneedsandaddhumanisedservices.Forth,thehospitalmustavoidinternalinfection.Thedesignshouldconfigurespacesinligentlyandusepressuredifferencetocontrolaircurrentandtoseparatethecleananddirtyair.Onlywhenhuman,

Thenewuniversityhospitalisnotatraditionalinstitutionalconstruction;itisafriendly,informalplacewithopen,well-structuredsurroundingswhichpresenta ingaspecttopatientsandtheirfamilies.AkershusUniversityHospitalhasbeendesignedtoemphasisesecurityandclarityinexperientiallyrichsurroundings,whereeverydayfunctionsandwell-knownmaterialsareintegratedintothehospital’sstructure.Althoughtheindividualpartsofthedevelopmenteachhavetheirownmaterialexpressionandthematerialexpressionofthedevelopmentvaries,nonethelessitisunitedintoawholebymeansofageneralarchitecturalthemecentredonpanelsandtransparency.Inthisway,aunityiscreatedbetweentheindividualpartsofthecomplex,whichtherebyreceiveasubtleeffectoftransparencyandAglass-roofedmainthoroughfare,inwhichwoodisthedominatingmaterial,linksthevariousbuildingsanddepartments.The“glassstreet”beginsintheingfoyerofthearrivalsarea,wherethemainreceptiondeskreceivesvisitors,andconcludesinthefoyerandseparatearrivalsareaoftheIntheglassstreet,thecentralelementinthedevelopment,thevariousmaterialsareunitedinanoverallcomposition,inwhichthelargecolouredpanelsdesignedbytheIcelandicartistBirgirAndréssonformanaturalelementandprovidea“palette”forthecolourschemeofthehospital.Theglassstreethasatown-likestructure,withpublicandsemi-publiczonesdefinedassquaresandopenspaces,offeringtheeverydayfunctionsofatown:church,pharmacy,hairdresser,florist,caféandkiosk,aswellastrafficnodesandotherservicesforthebenefitofpatients,relativesandstaff.Innaturalcontinuationofthesefunctions,anumberofotherservices,suchashealthinformation,polyclinicsandout-patientsurgeries,arelocatednearthestreetlevelofthethoroughfare.Thehospital’sstructurehelpstoensurethatthepatientremainsthenaturalfocusinthephysicaldesign,despitethestrictanddemandinglogisticalrequirementswhichunderlieallhospitalconstructions.Justastheoverallcomplexismadeupofclearandcomprehensibleunits,sotheindividualwardsarebuiltupfromsmallerelements.Thewardsarecentredaroundfourso-calledcourtyardswhichensureawell-defineddailylifeforthepatients,withamanageablelevelofsocialcontact,assistedbyaclearstaffinterface.Thewardsofthechildren’sdepartmentareequippedwithwindowswhichgivethechildrenandyoungpeopleindividualviewsofboththeskyandthesurroundinggreeneryfromtheirbeds.Thewell-equippedfacilitiesforparentssecureexcellentcontactbetweenthechildrenandtheirfamilies.ThegeometricalstructurelookscleanandMainentranceoftheThegreyinpatientThefaçadeusesstructural

Withacapacityof565bedsover70,000squaremetres,morethanahealthcareprojecttheClermont-FerrandHospital(CHUE)isaurbanprojectwhichlayoutandsettingopenrealopportunitiesfortheextensionofthecitybeyondtoday’sfrontiers.Replacingtheold“Ho -Dieu”erectedinthe18thcenturyinthetowncentre,thenewhospitalisbuiltontheformersiteoftheMichelinfactory.Locatedattheboundariesofthecity,inaquarterundergoingradicaltransformation,theCHUEactsasaproper“urbangenerator”,and estheanchorofanewtowndesignedto eafuturehealthcarecentre.Withitsmonumentalentry,likeametallicsailfloatingoverthesquare,thebuildingactsasalandmarkandmeetingpointforthenewdistrict.Genuinetechnicalprowess,itismadeof5pillarssupportingthe1,500squaremetresofthemetalliccover.Withitsplantednave,itextendstheexistingurbanframewhiledefiningnewaxesofcirculation.EverythingintheCHUEborrowsfromtheurbantypologyandvocabulary:places,squares,streets,alleyways…thehospitalisalreadyinthecity.Theinternalgreenpassageof250metreslongispunctuatedbyreadingandrestingzones,treatedlikeasemi-public,pedestrianandcommercialspace;inotherwords:aurbanstreet.Itslowergroundplustwowardslevels,coupledwithitsfragmentedvolumetry,completethisprimary“macro”structureandoffermoreintimistanddomesticspaces.Thescalesmanagementandthespaceshierarchyshowafunctionalorganisationbasedonapolesystemandastratificationofactivities.Withalifetimeof40years,healthcarefacilitiesmustbeflexibleandcompetitive.Herethearchitectshavedeployedarealambition,withanefficientandfastconstructionsite,anaveworkinglikeaventilatingbufferspace,andastructureallowingpotentiallya20%extension.3232AsideAmetallicsailsitsoutsidethemonumentalThemetallicroofissupportedbyfive111124855248555976312444444444413ThereisanexteriorstairononesideoftheMatchingwithglass,theredwallenhancedthebuilding’sTheFrenchwindowsallowsabundantTheinteriorofthehallcombinedwellwiththeMainConsultingNurseLiftWaitingStaffInter34213421ItisopenandspaciousTheelegantinteriorThecentralhallispeacefulandTheinteriordesigniscloseto

Thebriefaskedforahospitalthatdoesnotlooklikeatypicalhospital.Itshouldexudeconfidenceinusersasaplaceofscienceandprecisioninhealthcarefacilities.TheColumbiaAsiaMedicalCentreislocatedinNusajayaMedicalParkwhichispartofthenewspecialeconomiczoneofMalaysialocatedatthesouthern-mosttipofPeninsularMalaysia.Itistobeoneofthefirstbuildingstobedevelopedinthesoon-to-bemajorregionalcommercialhubequippedwith“high-tech”first-worldfacilities.Unlikemostoftheconventionallocalhospitalsthattrytocreateavernacularortropicalarchitecturallanguage,thishospitalmakesnoattempttofollowtheoldparadigmhospitaldesignintheregion.Itusescurtainwallto isenaturaldaylight.Visuallypleasinginproportion,thecladdingusedwasabrightsilvercompositealuminiumpanelsandbluetintedglasstogiveamoderncurtainwalllookwithacleansleekimage.Thisfunctionalhigh-techappearanceaimstoimpartasenseofconfidenceinthehealingtechnology.Sincethestructuralelementemployedwasrelativelysimple,thearchitectderivedeleganceofthebuildingfromtheintricatelanguageofdetailingwork.Theapproachwastocreateabalancebetweensatisfyingthecomplexfunctionalrequirementsofanefficientcompacthospitalandthecreationofaneasilyrecognisableand“iconic”architecturefortheowneraswellasaddressingthesurroundingcontextofthemedicalpark.Theinteriordesignofthehospital,ontheotherhand,takesonaapproachwhilstmaintaininga“homely”feel.Again,theaestheticsareachievedbytheappropriateuseofintricatedetailinginthejoinerywork.Naturallightingistherapeuticandhereitisabundantinthewardsaswellasthecommonareasinthebuilding.Theprototypedesigntooktheshapeofanefficientrectangularshape,wheregenerallytheFirstfloorisforthepatientcare.Allthepatientroomsareplacedherealongtheperimeterwithexternalwindowsforfiltereddaylight,andpossiblenaturalventilationincaseofpowerfailure.Groundfloorisdedicatedtodiagnostic,treatmentandadministrativefunctions.Allsupportingservicesandback-of-housefunctionsoccupytheonlybasementlevel.Allthemechanicalplantsandwater areplannedtocentraliseentirelyonthecoveredrooflevel,whichformsthemassnecessarilyfortherequiredfaçadeproportionconsideration.Thisenclosedrooflevel esaninterstitialspaceinsulatingthehabitablefloorbelow,assuchreducingverticalheatload,whichispredominantintropicalclimate.Bysong,allhabitablefloorsarealsofreeofmechanicalrooms,thereforereducingheat,noiseandcontaminationrisk.3434AnightviewofthemedicalThecolourfulmainThefaçadeconsistsofsilveraluminiumsheetandblueThedesignismodernand12121212ItiswarmandbrightTheinteriorspacehasagoodsupplyof32 2215 5EntranceWaitingLiftDisable231231TheopenandcleanpatientThewarmandcomfortablechildrenTheinteriordesignemphasiseondaylightandnatural2

Anewsix-storeypatienttoweristhefocalpointofarecentexpansionandrenovationoftheCommunityHospitalNorthinnapolis.Theproject,designedbyRTKL,alsoincludesafive-storeymedicalofficebuilding,asix-storyparkinggarage,andtherenovatedspaceintheexistingfacility.RTKLofferedservicesofarchitecture,interiorarchitectureanddesign,medicalequipmentandplanning.Theexistinghospitalhadmanyentrances,makingwayfindingconfusing.Thedesignerssolvedthisproblembycreatingonemainentrywhereallvisitorsenteralarge,two-storey,glass-enclosedgallerythatspansthefrontofthepatienttower.Thegalleryprovideseasyaccesstoallservicesandwasdesigned,inaddition,toshowcaseoriginalartbylocalartistsandtherebyenhancethehospital’shealingenvironment.Abovethegallery,aglasscurtainwalladmitsabundantnaturallighttopatientfloors.Theairy,art-filledbuildingisdesignedtoreducethestress,intimidation,andconfusioninherentintraditionalmedicalsettings.Newandexistingareaswereequippedwithstate-of-the-artdigitalinformationtechnology,securityandcommunicationsystems.RTKL’sHealthcareTechnologiesgroupprovidedmedicalequipmentplanningfortheproject.33121222221Main1

ErhaClinicSurabayaisaskincareclinic,locatedatoneofthebigcitiesinIndonesia–SurabayaThebuildingisasinglemassfour-storeybuildingwithartdeco+modernarchitecturestyle.Theproportionofthebuildingisdividedasbuilding’shead,neckandbody.Formalandrigidimpressionofsymmetricelementsisrefinedwiththepresenceofthetransparentglassboxwithpatternattheentrancewhichbecameoneofbuildingpointofinterests.Theverticalelementisverydominantinthebuilding.Theconcretethickbladebetweenthewindowshasaestheticvaluetothebuildingandalsohasafunctiontoreducesolarheatenteringthebuilding.Theselectionofnaturalstone,concrete,stainlesssteel,andpatterned-glassmaterialsfortheexteriorwaschosentogivetheexclusivityandprofessionalimpression,consideringthebuilding’sfunctionasacommercialbuildingwhichaimstoattractvisitors.Thebuildingmassisplacedawayfromthefrontsiteboundarytoreducethebulkyimpression.Thelongcanopyatthedrop-offareawhichservesasprotectionfromrainandheatalsogivesthewarmand ingimpressiontothevisitorofthebuilding.Thegrassblocksareusedinthesite,mostlyinparkingcirculation,toallowrainwaterinfiltrationintothesoildirectly.Naturallightinginthebuildingisachievedthroughthehighwindowsinstalledinfoursidesofthebuilding.Thewindowsprovidethenaturalairventilationforthebuildingwhenneeded.Twoindependentcirculationsareincludedintheproject:thecustomers’andthedoctors’circulation,sothattheywillnotinterferewitheachotherexceptinthetreatmentorconsultationroom.ThiscliniccompletesthevarietyneedsanddemandsofspecifichealthfacilitiesinSurabaya.Hopefully,thebuildingwilladdpositivevaluestothearea.331212275275632411ThebuildingisquiteTheelegantandluxuriousinteriorFoodWaiting4253142531TheinteriorTheuniquecarvedWhiteistakenasthemaincolourininteriorTheelegantandcomfortablewaitingThe44312312ThecleanandgenerousceilingThecomfortablepatientThetreatment4

Theinterventionisbasedontheremodellingandextensionoftheexistinghospitalandonthedesignofthepsychiatricunits.Intheopendialoguebetweenthedenseurbanpatternandthespaciouslandscape,thenewHedwigshöhehospitalistheturningpointforFalkenberg,asmallgardencityinBerlin’ssoutheastsuburbs.Tocontrasttheexistingstructure,thetwo-storeypavilionsofthepsychiatricwardareplayfullyjuxtaposed;theresultisasmallhospitalcitywheretheparataxisbetweenoldandnewisevident.Thenewpsychiatricdepartmentislocatednorth,ontheslopeofFlakenberghill.Patientsare edinpairedpavilions,eachsetastocreateaslightcrenelationtowardthesurroundingopenlandscape.Thetwolevelsfollowthescaleofclose-byhomesandtheirpatiosreachforaviewoverthelandscape;thefaçadesofthecourtsarewoodandglassandwoodenbattenscharacterisethehospitalthatisdefinedbythecontrastbetweenwhiteplasterandhorizontalwoodenfit-ups.Alongtheexternalperimeter,thesquarewindowsaredividedinthreepartsandslightlyprojectfromthewall.Thehospitalisonfivelevels.Onbasementlevelaretherapyunits,kitchen,cafeteria,ancillaryservices,andstafflocker-rooms.Ongroundfloorare:entrancehall,cafeteria,emergencyunits,laboratories,radiology,MRT,CT,functionaldiagnosis,endoscopy,medicalservices,psychiatryandthree24-bedpsychiatricwards.Inthevillaisthearchive,day-hospitalandpsychiatricvisitingrooms,inthetoweristheobituaryandthechapel.Onhospital’sfirstflooraretwo32-bedinterdisciplinarywards,8-bedmultidisciplinaryintensivecareunits,two24-bedpsychiatricwards,areasforoccupationaltherapy,staffchangingrooms.Inthevillaaremedsofficeswhileadministrationisinthetower.Onhospital’ssecondandthirdfloorareothertwointerdisciplinarywardsandonthelastfloorofthet
