Reading Comprehension 阅读理解本部分共4篇文章,20个问题,每题2分,共40分。(A)There are some people who actually enjoy work-in fact, they love to work. They spend many extra hours on the job each week and often take work home with them. These workaholics are as addicted (上了瘾的) to their jobs as other people are to drugs or alcohol. In some city centers, workaholism is so common that people do not consider it unusual: They accept the lifestyle as normal. Workaholism can be a serious problem. Because true workaholics would rather work than do anything else, they probably dont know how to relax; that is, they might not enjoy movies, sports, or other types of entertainment. Most of all, they hate to sit and do nothing. The lives of workaholics are usually stressful (紧张的,压力重的), and this stress can cause health problems. In addition, typical workaholics dont pay much attention to their families. They spend little time with their children, and marriages may end. Is worhaholism always dangerous? Perhaps not. There are, certainly, people who work well under stress. Some studies show that many workaholics have great energy and interest in life. Their work is so pleasurable that they are actually very happy. For most workaholics, work and entertainment are the same thing. Their jobs provide them with a challenge; this keeps them busy and creative. Other people retire from work at age sixty-five, but workaholics usually prefer not to quit. They are still interested in work-and life-in their eighties and nineties. Perhaps some people are forced to work, but their addiction to work seems to be a safe-even an advantageous-one.根据上面文章内容,从每题下面四个选择中选出一个最合适的答案,并在答题纸上把所选的编号字母涂黑。21 The word “workaholics ” in the first paragraph refers to those _.A) who spend most of their time working and have no interest in other thingsB) who dont know how to enjoy movies or do sports in their spare timeC) who do not have a good relationship with their children and wivesD) who are always under stress and dont know how to get rid of it22 .A problem worhaholism may cause is that_.A) the chance to live together with families may be goodB) the overwork might do damage to peoples healthC) the life under stress might be dull and boringD) the ability to get along with people is not developed23. Which of the following might be the best title for this article?A) Workaholism. B) Work and Entertainment.C) An Addiction. C) Work and Health.(B)For many people, there seems to be no escape from poverty; in other words, they are poor, and they have no hope that this will ever change. In addition, they have the social problems of poverty. Imagine this situation: a poor woman has an idea for a small business to lift her and her family out of poverty. She needs a little money to begin this business and goes to a bank to borrow the money. At this bank, as at most banks, the borrower must meet three necessary conditions: character, capacity, and collateral. She must show that she (1) is honest( has character), (2) is able to run her business( has capacity), and (3) owns a house, land, or something valuable( collateral) for the bank to take if she cant pay back the money. So what happens to the woman? The bank wont lend her money because she doesnt have any collateral. One possible solution these days is microlending (lending a small amount of money). This is a system of special banks and programs that are loaning money to people in “borrowing groups,” For example, an international organization called Good Faith lends small amounts of money to people who wants to go into business. Each person must do two things to borrow money : take classes in business and join a borrowing group. This is a group of people who own and run their own small business. Everyone in the group must approve the loan of every other group member, or Good Faith wont lend the money. To receive a loan from Good Faith, people still must have character. They find capacity in the business classes. But collateral is not necessary any longer. Instead of collateral, there is peer pressure, i.e., group members make sure that each person pays back his or her loan. They want to keep their “good name” and continue doing business with Good Faith.根据上面文章内容,从每题下面四个选择中选出一个最合适的答案,并在答题纸上把选的编号字母涂黑。26. Go into any health food shop and there they are, lining shelf after shelf. The vitamin and food supplement business has in the last few years grown into a multi-million pound industry. About 10 million people in Britain are thought to take the pills. “It is the result of increased health awareness,” Dr. Wendy Doyle said.In addition, the industry has grown in marketing strength, carrying out large advertising sections in womens, consumer and diet magazines. But fierce arguments and concern in the medical profession have also grown.Doctors claim that the public could be damaging their health or making diagnosis(诊断) of serious conditions impossible. No one doubts that supplements can have some benefits in some circumstances. But the industry claims that anyone who is old, stressed, smokes or drinks too much, is recovering from an illness or is doing lots of exercise-just about everyone-should take supplements.Doctors say that for most people, most of the time, thats simply not true. “You shouldnt just rely on vitamin pills and not eat vegetables,” said Doyle. Many doctors are alarmed at how often people are encouraged to take far in excess of the recommended daily amount. At best, the excess vitamins, such as Vitamin B and Vitamin C, will get washed out of the body. But Vitamins A,D,E,K are stored in the liver, and large doses will probably build up.There is growing evidence that excessive doses can result in considerable harm. For example, Vitamin E in large doses can lead to internal bleeding. As there is little regulation of the health supplement industry in the UK, it is difficult to know how many people have been unfavorably affected.根据上面文章内容,从每题下面的四个选择中选出一个最适合的答案,并在答题纸上把选的编号字母涂黑。31. A recent poll by Gallup found that only 8 percent of people say they have never lied, while 25 percent of the people interviewed admitted they lie daily.Integrity at work has now become a major issue. Todays secretaries are increasingly expected to lie for other people-especially for the boss.About 79 percent of support staff, according to one survey, were asked to invent the truth on behalf of their boss last year. These may be white lies such as “Im afraid Mr. Jones is having a meeting.” More seriously, secretaries may be expected to give false information about expenses on the bosss behalf. Christine Allan, the personal assistant to an oil company boss who went on trial for fraud in 1999, claims that lying has become “standard practice” for secretaries in the City, Londons financial center.Little wonder that support staff tired of this, says Richard Grace, who was in charge of the survey. “Our report found most secretaries believe that dishonesty can, in some circumstances, be justified in business life. But almost one third believe that being required not to be honest affects personal integrity.”Being asked to lie for the boss can also affect pubic integrity-especially if you are called into the court. “If you are asked to tell serious lies,” one lawyers says, “and you do so, you can face more serious related problems for your actions than ever before”.根据上面文章内容,从每题下面的四个选择中选出一个最合适的答案,并且在答题纸上把选的编号字母涂黑。36.
