jazzwasseriousmusic.Gershwinagreedtocomposesomethingfortheconcert

beforeherealizedhehadjustafewweekstodoit.Andinthatshorttime,he

composedapieceforpianoandorchestrawhichhecalledRhapsodyin

Blue.Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.Theaudiencewerethrilled

whentheyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworld-famousandshowedthatjazzmusic

couldbebothseriousandpopular.

In1928,GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudycomposition(作曲)withthe

well-knownmusicianNadiaBoulanger,butsherejectedhim.Shewasafraidthat
