thefuture.Theparticipantsalsocompletedmeasuresofdepressionandanxietysymptoms.

Theircognitivefunctionwasassessed,measuringmemory,attention,spatialcognition,andlanguage.

Some(113)oftheparticipantsalsounderwentPETbrainscans,measuringdepositsoftauandamyloid,two

proteinswhichcausethemostcommontypeofdementia,Alzheimer?sdisease,whentheybuildupinthe

brain.

TheresearchersfoundthatpeoplewhoexhibitedhigherRNTpatternsexperiencedmorecognitive

declineoverafour-yearperiod,anddeclinesinmemory(whichisamongtheearliersignsofAlzheimer?s

disease),andtheyweremorelikelytohaveamyloidandtaudepositsintheirbrain.

“Weproposethatrepetitivenegativethinkingmaybeanewriskfactorfordementiaasitcould

contributetodementiainauniqueway,“saidDrMarchant.

TheresearcherssuggestthatRNTmaycontributetoAlzheimer'sriskviaitsimpactonindicatorsof

stresssuchashighbloodpressure,asotherstudieshavefoundthatphysiologicalstresscancontributeto

amyloidandtaudeposition.
