doubledthespeedofPETbreakdown,andengineeringaconnectionbetweenthetwoenzymestocreate
a"super-enzyme”,increasedthisactivitybyafurtherthreetimes.
Theteamwasco-ledbythescientistswhoengineeredPETase,ProfessorJohnMcGeehanandDr
GreggBeckham.ProfessorMcGeehansaid:"GreggandIwerechattingabouthowPETaseattacksthe
surfaceoftheplasticsandMHETasechopsthingsupfurther,soitseemednaturaltoseeifwecoulduse
themtogether.Ourfirstexperimentsshowedthattheydidworkbettertogether,sowedecidedto
physicallylinkthem.Ittookagreatdealofwork,butitwasworththeeffort-weweredelightedtosee
thatournewenzymeisuptothreetimesfasterthantheseparateenzymes.”
TheoriginalPETaseenzymediscoveryindicatedthefirsthopethatasolutiontotheglobalplastic
pollutionproblemmightbewithingrasp,thoughPETasealoneisnotyetfastenoughtohandlethetons
ofPETbottles.Combiningitwithasecondenzyme,andfindingtogethertheyworkevenfaster,means
anotherleapforwardhasbeentakentowardsfindingasolutiontoplasticwaste.PETaseandthenew
combinedMHETase-PETasebothworkbydigestingPETplastic.Thisallowsforplasticstobemade
