react?Justthesetwowordscancarrymuchinformation.Theycouldbeinterpreted

asawelcominggreetingfromaclosefriend,especiallyifaccompaniedbyagentle

smile.Whenspokenbyastranger,theycanfunctionasameansofattractingyour

attention.Muchofwhatwecommunicateisdependentnotonlyonthewordsweuse,

butalsoonhowweusethem.So,lefslookalittledeeperintothetopicof

communication.

Communicationistheexchangeofinformationbetweenasenderandareceiver.

Thesenderencodesamessageandsendsitfacetoface,orthroughvideo,telephone,

mailorsocialmedia.Thismessageisthenreceivedanddecodedbythereceiver.In

response,thereceiversendsanencodedmessageback,whichisreferredtoas

feedback.Thisfeedbackisdecodedbytheoriginalsenderandtheentirecycle

repeatsitselfuntiltheyhavefinishedcommunicating.

Thiscomplexprocesscanbechallengingbut,withpracticeandpatience,you

tocommunicatewiththem.Dependingonifyouarecommunicatingwithastranger,

friend,familymember,orco-worker,youwillneedtodecidewhichcommunication

channelbestsuitsthesituation.Furthermore,youwillneedtodeterminethe

appropriatestyletouseandhowcomplexyourchoiceofwordsshouldbe.For

example,ifyouareabusinesspersonnegotiatingwithalargeenterpriseaboutadeal,

youshoulddoitfacetoface,usingformallanguage,inastraightforwardmanner.

Yourbodylanguageisequallyimportant,sinceitrevealsalotaboutyour

thoughtsandattitudes.Makesureitclearlysupportsthemessageyouwanttodeliver.

“Thesushirestaurantsmenuwasconfusing."Isthereanythingspecialabout

thissentence?Well,allthewordsexcept"the"and"was"areborrowedfromother

languages!Thiscomesasnosurprise,giventhatEnglishhasborrowedwordsfrom

morethan300differentlanguages,includingLatin,Greek,FrenchandChinese.

However,Englishisnotaloneinborrowingwordsfromotherlanguages一

borrowedwordscanbefoundinalmostalllanguages.Forexample,Chinesewords

thatareoriginallyfromtheEnglishlanguageinclude“培根”(bacon),“坦克”(tank)

and“高尔夫"(golf),andJapanesehasborrowedwordslike"豆腐"(tofti)from

Chinese.

Wordborrowingcomesaboutwhentwocultureswithdifferentlanguages

interact.Thistendstohappenwhenthereisnosuitablewordforanobjectorideain

thenativetongue.Thisphenomenonhasbeenoccurringforthousandsofyears.In

thecurrentageofglobalization,whencommunicationtechnologybringsdifferent

culturesclosertogether,wordsareevenmorelikelytobeborrowedstraightfromthe

sourcelanguageatafasterpacethaneverbefore,especiallythoserelatedto

technologicaldevelopments,suchas"email”and“Internet”.

Thoughborrowingwordshasbecomefaster,theprocessisstillcomplex,andit

takestimebeforenewwordsareintegratedintoeverydayspeech.Atfirst,the

borrowedwordisonlyusedbybilingualspeakers.Itthenspreadstopeoplewhodo

notknowtheoriginallanguage,andtheywillchangethepronunciationtofitthe

waytheyspeak,almostunknowingly.Anexampleofthisistheword“kungfu",

whichreferstoChinesemartialarts.ThiswordcomesfromtheChinesewords”功

夫”(gongfu).Overtime,thesoundsthatweredifficulttopronouncewerereplaced

withmorefamiliarones.Thelongeraborrowedwordhasbeeninuse,themoreit

soundsandevenlookslikethenativelanguage.

Borrowedwordsareanoutcomeoflanguagedevelopmentthatcouldhardlybe

avoided,butsomelanguagecommunitiesopposeadoptingwordsfromother

cultures.Therearecountriesthatmakeinterventionstokeeptheirnativelanguage

pureinordertodefendtheiridentity.TheFrenchspecificallyhaveanofficial

organizationthatcreatesnewwords,inordertoavoidborrowedwords.Some

languageshaveanextremelysmallnumberofspeakers,suchastheNative

AmericanNavajoIndianlanguage,usedonlybythemembersofthetribe.Under

thiscircumstance,itbecomesamatterofsurvivalforthenativelanguagetoreject

outsideinfluences.

Whilesomecommunitiesarepessimisticabouttheexchangebetween

languages,therearealsootherlanguagesthatreadilywelcomeborrowedwords.

English,especially,isbasedonamixofLatin,GreekandGermaniclanguages.The

English-speakingcommunitydoesnothesitateinabsorbingforeignwordsintoits

dailyvocabulary.Infact,therehaveneverbeenanyformalacademicrestrictionson

newborrowedwords.Borrowingwordsallowsthelanguagetocontinuetodevelop,
