many

applications

where

it

is

desirable

to

knowthe

level

of

the

liquid

stored

in

atank

or

container.

The

classical

method

to

determinethis

has

been

to

use

a

float,

which

either

directly

operates

a

mechanical

switch,

or

which

contains

a

magnetto

operate

a

reed

switch.

In

both

caseswe

have

a

device

prone

to

mechanical

wear,

and

hence

a

possible

long-term

reliability

issue.

A

further

difficulty

is

that

this

sensingmethod

typically

meansa

large

physical

size

for

the

switch.An

alternative

method

is

to

useacapacitive

sensor

which

determines

the

difference

in

dielectric

constant

along

the

length

of

apiece

of

dielectricmaterial.

Whilst

this

offersasolutionwithno

moving

parts

it

also

infersa

large

physical

size,

and

the

operation

can

be

affected

by

metal

parts

andnoise.To

overcome

these

issues

Honeywell

developed

arange

of

solid

state

liquid

level

switches

which

offered

no

moving

parts,

reliable

operation,small

physical

size

and

also

lower

cost.And

so

the

LL

liquid

level

sensors

was

principle

Total

Internal

Reflection.

A

light-emitting-diode

(LED)

transmits

infraredlight

to

the

inner

surface

of

a

plastic

dome;

when

no

liquid

is

present

on

the

outer

surface

of

the

dome

then

the

majority

of

this

light

is

reflectedinternally

and

picked

up

by

an

infrared

receiver;

when

liquid

covers

the

surface

of

the

dome

then

the

refractive

index

at

the

dome-liquid

boundarychanges

and

so

a

significant

amount

oflight

escapes

into

the

liquid.This

means

that

the

intensity

oflight

atthe

receiver

reduces

-

it

is

this

change

in

intensity

(and

hence

change

in

signal

output

from

the

receiver)whichis

used

to

provide

an

output

signal

to

indicate

the

presence

of
