ReadingisoneofthemostimportantpartsofEnglishteaching,andimprovingstudents’readingcomprehensionabilityisoneofthefundamentalgoalsinschoolsofChina.Manystudentsstillfeelfrustratedinreadingcomprehension.Therefore,tostudytextanalysisisoneofthemostimportantwaystoimprovethereadingcomprehension.Cohesiontheoriesareanimportantpartintextlinguistics.Cohesionitselfispartofthetext-formingcomponentinthelinguisticsystem,whichiscategorizedintotwotypes:grammaticalandlexical.HallidayandHasanarguethatlexicalcohesionisthehighestlevelofcohesionandadifficultmeanstohandle;Hoeyclaimsthatitisthemostsingleimportantformofcohesivetie.Afterathoroughanalysisoflexicalcohesioninforms,functionsandthewayshowtheyrelateonesentencetooneanotherintext,theauthorputsforwardsomepracticalandinstructivesuggestionsontheteachingofEnglishreading,hopingthisthesiswillhelptofacilitatestudents’cohesiveawarenessandimprovetheirreadingability.

1.Introduction

Cohesionisoneofthenecessarydevicesfortheproductionofatext,whichmakesatextconciseandinformationprominentandlogiccoherent.Lexicalcohesionisakindofcohesivedevicethatarisesfromsemanticrelationshipsamongwords,whichhasdirectrelationshipwithtextanalysisandlanguageteaching.Tobeginwith,thehistoricalstudiesontextandpresentsituationoftextanalysiswillbediscussed,includingthedevelopmentofcohesiontheoriesandscholars’contributionstocohesiontheoriesbothathomeandabroad.Secondly,differenttypesoflexicalcohesionundertwoheadings,namely,reiterationandcollocation,andtheirsignificanceinunderstandingatextwillbeanalyzed..Thirdly,adetaileddiscussionofformingalexicalnetontextuallevel,i.e.,howadjacentandnon-adjacentsentencesarerelatedtoeachotherandformameaningfultext,andthewaystoidentifythelinksandbondsaswellasthesignificanceoflinks,bondsandnetinatextwillbecarriedout.Finally,therewillbeadiscussionoftheinteractiveprocessofreading,theimportanceoflexicalcohesionanditspedagogicalimplicationsintheteachingofcollegeEnglishreading.

2.LexicalCohesionasCluestotheUnderstandingofText

LexicalcohesionisoneofthemostimportantaspectsofcohesioninEnglishtext.Geearguesthatspeakersandwritershavetodomorethanconnectclauseswithinsentences.Theymustalsoconnectsentencesacrosswholetexts.Thelexicaldevicesusedtocreatesuchconnectionsarelexicalcohesivedevices,whicharepartofwhatmakesatextcoherent.Lexicalcohesiondependsonthechoicesofparticularlexicalitems,whicharerelatedtotherelevantprecedingexpressionsthroughsomerecognizablesemanticrelation.Avarietyofsemanticrelationshipsthatcanexistbetweenlexicalitemsareundertwoheadings:reiterationandcollocation.Inthischapter,differenttypesoflexicalcohesionand,asclues,howtheyfunctiontohelpreadersunderstandawrittentextwithmanyexampleswillbeanalyzed.

3.AnalysisofCategorizationandFunctionofReiteration

Reiterationisrepetitionofthewords,i.e.,onelexicalitemrefersbacktoanother.Itinvolvestherepetitionofalexicalitemortheoccurrenceofarelateditem,whichmaytaketheformofasynonymoranear-synonymoftheoriginal,orasuperordinateorageneralworddominatingtheentireclass.Putitinotherway,anyinstanceofreiterationmaybethesamewords,asynonym,asuperordinateorageneralword.

4.Conclusion

Firstly,EnglishteachersplayanimportantroleinEnglishteaching.Therefore,itisnecessaryandimportantforEnglishteacherstoequipthemselveswithcohesiontheoryshiftingtheirconcernsfromgrammartodiscourse,andcultivatingandenhancingstudents’senseoftext,insteadoftheisolatedsentencesasrealizationoflinguisticstructures.

Secondly,theteachingandpracticeofvocabularyshouldbeconductedatthediscourselevel.Itisbettertoprovideasituationandassociatethenewwordsandphraseswiththecontext.

ThepresentstudyisonlyamodestattempttoshedsomelightontheimprovementofEnglishwriting.Itisfarfromextensiveorconclusive,andmuchmoreworkneedstobedonebeforewecanarriveataperfectsolutiontotheproblem.Itishopedthatmorein-depthstudieswillbeconductedtosupportthefindingsinthisstudy,whichwillbenefitbothlanguagelearningandteaching.
