HiltonfoundthatAmericanEnglishspeakershavedifferentconversational

styles.Sheidentifiedtwodistinctgroups:highandlowintensityspeakers.Highinten­

sityspeakersaregenerallyuncomfortablewithmomentsofsilenceinconversation

andconsidertalkingatthesametimeasignofengagement.Lowintensityspeakers

finditrudetotalkatthesametimeandpreferpeoplespeakoneafteranotherincon­

versation.

Thedifferencesinconversationalstylesbecameevidentwhenparticipantslis­

tenedtoaudioclipsinwhichtwopeoplespokeatthesametimebutwereagreeing

witheachotherandstayedontopic,Hiltonsaid.Thehighintensitygroupreported

thatconversationswherepeoplespokeatthesametimewhenexpressingagreement

werenotinterruptivebutengagedandfriendlierthantheconversationswithmoments

ofsilenceinbetweenspeakingturns.Incontrast,thelowintensitygroupperceived

anyamountofsimultaneous(同时)chatasarudeinterruption,regardlessofwhat

thespeakersweresaying.
