vingusercommandscontroltheamountoflightinandotherswitchingequipment.SmarthomecontrollerthroughGPRSmodule,toachievethefamilysystemandtheextenetworkcommunicationasacentralpartofthesmarthomesystemtosolvethebottleneckthekeytechnology.GPRS(GeneralPacketRadioService)isshort,theexistingGSMsystemaddanewGGSN(GatewaySupportNode)andSGSN(ServiceSupportNode)nodedevelopedanewpacketdatabearerservices.GPRSwiththeexistingGSMsystemthemostfundamentaldifferenceis,GPRSisapacketswitchingsystem,particularlysuitableforintermittentfrequent,smallamountsofdatatransfer,butalsototheoccasionallargedatatransferadvantageofGPRSnetworktransmissionsare:alwaysonline,accordingtotrafficaccountlogon,high-speedtransmission,withinarestrictedrange(transmissiondistance,terraetc.),anddatatransmissionreliability.Part21.IntroductionTheboomingInternethasbroadenedthetraditionalconceptofsmartconsumerappliances.Originally,smartconsumerappliancesarejuststand-alonedevicesthathavethecontrolprogramrunningbythemselves.Duetohardwarelimitations,theseappliancescanonlyimplementsomesimplecontrolalgorithmsthatcanatmostachievelocaloptimalcontroleffects.Nowadaysmoreandmoreconsumerapplianceshavethecapabilitiestobenterconnectedbymanykindsofcommunicationmediasuchasphonelines,utilitylines,andwirelesstechnology,andeveconnectedtotheInternet.Thistrendofdevelopmentbringspromisingprospectstofuturehomeappliancesthatwillnotonlyletusersmaintain,monitor,andcontrolappliancesmoreeasilyandconveniently,butalsowillmakethelong-timeexpectedremote-controlledhomeappliancesAremote-controllablehomeappliancecanbeconsideredasaslavedevicetotheremotecothatresidesinfarendandhaspowerfulmainframerunningadvancedcontrolalgorithms.Theappliancerunsitsowncontrolprogramwhileatthesametimecanreceivecontrolcommands,configurationparametersorevenupdatedcontrolalgorithmsfromtheremotecontrollertooptimalcontroleffectinthegloballevel.Inordertomeetthischallenge,anewarchitectureforsmartconsumerappliancessystemsneedstobeproposed.Ontheotherhand,Hardwareimplementationofcontrolsystemswillbeoneofimportantissuesinthedevelopmentofsmartconsumerelectronics.Forsimpleapplicationsuch,assmarttoys,microwaves,andwashingmachines,simplecontrolalgorithmscanbeusedandimplemeonasinglechipthatmaycostverylittle.However,formorecomplexproblems,suchassmartheating,ventilation,andairconditioning(WAC)forindividualhousesorofficebuildingscontrolmethodsmustbeutilizedandimplementedwithsophisticatedhardwarethatwouldcostsignificantlymorethantheconventionalcontrollers.Forexample,anintelligentPLC(programmablelogiccontroller)forenergyefficientandwavingtemperaturecontrolmaycostseveraltimesmorethanahouseholdairconditioningunit.Thismightbejustifiedforsomeindustrialapplicationsbutobviouslynotacceptableforaverageindividualcustomers.Thmakesmartconsumerelectronicsmarketableforthistypeofapplications,innovativeapprimplementationmustbeestablishedtoreducethecosttoalevelacceptabletoaveragecuInthefollowingsections,thearchitectureofintelligentcontrolsystemsforconsumerapInternetisbrieflypresented,andthenanetwork-basedmemos-fuzzyimplementationisdesc2.ArchitectureofNetworkedAppliancesFigureshowstwoversionsofarchitecturefornetworkedappliances.Botharchitecturesseencomposedoftwodifferenttypesoffunctionaldevices:home-basedappliances,andremotecontrollers.Theremotecontrollersinbotharchitecturesplaythesameroleas:a)runnicontrolalgorithmsandissuecontrolcommands;b)monitoringtherunningstatusofappliaThedifferencebetweenthesetwoarchitecturesisonthehomeside.InarchitectureappliancesmustfirstconnecttoHomeControlSystem,whichfunctionsinpartasacommongatewaytotheInternetforallappliances.Thisarchitectureissuitableforcurrentimplementationbecausenetworkedapplianceisstillinitsearlystageofdevelopment;theyarestilllacsoftwareandhardwareinterfacestotheInternet.Besides,thedataexchangebetweenhomeappliancesandremotecontrolleratcurrentstagearelimited,thereforetheutilitylinlinesareenoughfortransmittingsimplecontrolsignals.Architecture(II)isthechoiceforfuturedevelopmentwhileallhomeapplianceshavedirectaccesstotheInternet.Inthiscase,largeamountsofreal-timedatafromhomeappliancescanbefedbacktoremotecontrollerastheinputthroughInternet,andcontroloutput,whichcouldvaryfromsimplecontrolparametevaluestoupdatedalgorithms,canalsobedownloadedtothecorrespondingappliances.ThearchitecturesproposedherehavetheiroriginsinDistributedControlSystems(DCS),whichiswidelyusedinindustrialautomationandprovedtobematureandreliable.Frompointofview,thenetworkedappliancessystemsandDCSaresimilar,andthosefunctionalinnetworkedappliancessystemscanalsofindtheircounterpartinDCS.ButasignificantliesinthefactthatDCSusesproprietarycommunicationprotocolsinalocalareanetworexchange,thusitisnotanopenarchitecturethatmakesdevicesfromdifferentvendorsvifit’snotimpossibletobeinterconnected,whilenetworkedappliancessystemsrelyonthatusesTCP/IP,thedefactoprotocolfornetworkcommunication,soanyappliancesthatisTCP/IPcompatiblecanbeeasilyinterconnectedandcommunicatewithotherappliancesthatarealreadyonthenet.3.ConclusionThispaperpresentsarchitectureoftheintelligent
