摘要 本文的研究对象是英汉双语中两种颇为相似的修辞格，即英语中的“a n t i t h e s i s ” 和汉语中的“对偶”。这两种以“平衡”和“对称”为主要特点的修辞格，不仅 是各自语言中历史悠久，源远流长的文学、诗学表达模式，更深刻地影响着修辞 使用者的思维习惯以及社会生活，因而具有重要的文化意义。先前，已有若干学 者对此二者从文学或语言学角度进行过比较研究，其成果主要集中在揭示其句法 和语义方面的异同上。而本文在前人的基础之上，引入了一个新的研究角度，即 出爱德华霍尔在2 0 世纪6 0 年代提出的“隐蔽文化”角度。霍尔指出，隐蔽文 化是整个文化体系中埋藏最深，最难察觉，同时也最易阻碍不同文化之间相互理 解和跨文化交际的部分。同时，本文还具有批判性地回顾了两派相关语言学理论： 萨丕尔一沃尔夫的“语言决定文化”假说和韩礼德关于语法和句法可以作为文化 符号来看待的理论。在回顾文化学、语言学、符号学理论以及前人研究成果的基 础上，本文选取了大量的，具有较高知名度和较强代表性的a n t i t h e s i s 及对偶语 例，从音位、词法、句法、语义和语篇等层面对它们进行了详尽的对比语言学分 析，继而讨论了a m i t h e s i s 和对偶在中西宗教、政治、社会和教育等领域中所扮 演的角色和曾给这些领域带来的深远影响，从中揭示出两种修辞格在隐蔽文化层 面上的根本差异。根据上述研究，作者认为，从整体上而言，a n t i t h e s i s 代表着 一种以内容和功能为导向的，诉求实用，高度崇尚竞争，在更大程度上朝向未来 的文化：而对偶就其实质而言，则是一种以艺术审美追求为核心，崇尚社会和谐， 尽力维护传统，更加注重过去的文化的化身。作者认为，深入探讨修辞格中隐藏
