For people whose blood and ancestry are from a country thousands of miles away from where they were born and raised, where is their home?,Remem
7、ber Your Home,In-depth Reading,1 “No matter where you are in this world and no matter where your life may take you, remember that your home will always be right here.”,2 As a ten-year-old girl, I had no idea what my grandmother meant when she sat me down and told me these words on a summer evening.
8、How could my home be in a little village in Poland, more than four thousand miles away from where I was born and raised? My home was in Brooklyn, New York. That was where my friends were, that was where I went to school, and that was surely where my home was.,In-depth Reading,3 As years passed, howe
9、ver, I continued to visit my grandmother every summer in that very same Polish village. I was not entirely sure what compelled me to return year after year. But I have realized now that I kept coming back because, consciously or not, I knew there was a certain truth in those words that my grandmothe
10、r uttered to me on that warm summer evening.,4 My Polish culture has always been a huge part of my life. My parents immigrated to the United States in 1994, only two years before I was born. Because their English vocabulary at that time was relatively limited, I grew up speaking only the Polish lang
11、uage. Any English words I may have picked up were all thanks to the efforts of Barney, the happiest dinosaur on television. Unfortunately, despite having committed all of Barneys catchy songs to memory, my language barrier became evident once I started pre-kindergarten. I couldnt understand why none
12、 of my classmates ate gofry (Polish for “waffles”) for breakfast, or why they all stared blankly at me whenever I suggested we play zabawa w chowanego (hide-and-seek) during recess. However, while my weekdays were marked by such challenges, my weekends were an entirely different experience. Every Sa
13、turday morning, I eagerly skipped along to the Henryk Sienkiewicz Polish School in Brooklyn.,In-depth Reading,5 It didnt bother me that I had to go to school six days a week instead of five, for I valued the time spent among my Polish teachers and classmates. It comforted me that my teachers knew wh
14、at I meant when I asked to go to the ubikacja (bathroom), and that my classmates were always willing to share their kanapki (sandwich) with me when I forgot my lunch at home. It was here that I acquired friendships which I cherish to this day.,6 As time progressed, however, and as my English became
15、increasingly fluent, I experienced a change of attitude. The one day spent each week in the Polish school could not compare to the five days spent in the English school.,In-depth Reading,7 I quickly realized that I could no longer express my thoughts in Polish with the ease and fluency I was once ab
16、le to. My parents also noticed this change, but they refused to let me forget my native language. They continued to send me to the Polish school, to read Polish books with me, and to correct me every now and then when I made a grammatical error in speaking. They also made sure I was getting the full
17、 cultural experience, encouraging me to participate in every single Pulaski Day parade, take part in numerous traditional Polish story-telling competitions, and most importantly, sending me to Poland every summer to familiarize myself with important landmarks and visit my family. For their continued
18、 efforts, I could not be more thankful.,In-depth Reading,8 Although Polish is no longer my primary language, it will always remain my primary nationality. It manifests itself within every aspect of my daily life, from the customary foods to the traditional music. My Polish heritage has shaped me int
