Roadsidecontainerstands.Fouryearslaterthecitybegancollectingbiodegradable

wastedoortodoor;separatecollectionofbiowasteissettobecomemandatoryacross

Europein2023,butLjubljanawasnearlytwodecadesaheadofthecurve.

In2013,everydoorstepinthecityreceivedbinsforpackagingandpaper

waste.And,mostcontroversially,scheduledcollectionsoftheresidualwastewerecut

byhalf—forcingpeopletoseparatetheirrubbishmoreefficiently.

Theresultshavebeenimpressive.In2008,thecityrecycledonly29.3%ofits

wasteandwaslaggingbehindtherestofEurope.Todaythatfigureis68%,andits

landfillreceivesalmost80%lessrubbish,puttingitatthetopofthecyclingleader

boardofEUcapitals.TheSloveniancapitalnowproducesonly115kgofresidual
