Thisyear'smeeting,whichstartsonJan.23,mightbealittledifferent.Thoughtsmaybeinthevalleyratherthanthehills.Ayearago,subprimehadnotenteredthelexiconofthenightlynews,andmostAmericansprobablythoughtthat"creditcrunch"wasabreakfastcereal.Weallknowbetternow.InthewakeofthereportthatDecember'sUSunemploymentratehadjumpedto5%,thehighestlevelintwoyears,theBushAdministrationandCongress,RepublicansandDemocrats,startedfallingoverthemselvestryingtofindapoliticallyacceptablestimuluspackage.WitharecessionintheAmericaneconomylookingtobeimminent,thetirelesslocomotiveoftheglobaleconomyseemsfinallytohaverunoutofpuff.

Howseriousaretheconsequenceslikelytobe?Muchmorecouldgowrong:acollapseofthedollar,orofUSconsumerconfidenceashousepricescontinuetheirfall.Butonbalance,thedenizensofDavoswouldbewelladvisedtokeepuptheirsunnyspirits.Takingthelongview,theglobaleconomyisataremarkablemoment.Whateverthechanceofarecessionthisyear,theUShasexperiencedwhattheeconomistandformerUnderSecretaryoftheTreasuryforInternationalAffairsJohnB.TaylorofStanfordUniversitycallsa"longboom"sincetheFedstartedtosqueezeinflationoutofthesystemin1979.Fornearly30years,Taylorpointsout,thefewdownturnstheUShassufferedhave,inhistoricalterms,beenbothshortandshallow.EvenmoreextraordinaryisthetaleoutsidetheUSAccordingtotheWorldBank'srecentGlobalEconomicProspectsreport,globalgrowthin2007was3.6%,downalittlefrom3.9%in2006.Butamongdevelopingeconomies,growthwasaremarkable7.4%,thefifthsuccessiveyearofanexpansionofmorethan5%.Thisisn'tjustthepredictabletaleoftheriseofChinaandIndia;onthebackofstrongcommodityprices(andrelativepeace),Africaneconomies,too,areperformingbetterthantheyhaveforageneration.

Howdidtheworldcometothishappyposition?Youcanlisttheusualreasons:twodecadesofdecentmacroeconomicpolicymaking,thetriumphofmarketsandthecollapseofcommandeconomies,thedisseminationoftransformingtechnologiesandtoolssuchastheInternet,andopentradingsystems.Allofthesearetheattributesthatcombinetoformthatmuchdiscussedphenomenon:globalization.Butinthisspecialreport,welookatoneoverlookedaspectofageneration'sworthofglobalgrowth:theextenttowhichNewYorkCity,London,andHongKong,threecitieslinkedbyasharedeconomicculture,havecometobebothexamplesandexplanationsofglobalization.Connectedbylong-hauljetsandfiber-opticcable,andspacedneatlyaroundtheglobe,thethreecitieshave(byaccident—nobodyplannedthis)createdafinancialnetworkthathasbeenabletolubricatetheglobaleconomy,and,critically,easetheentryintothemodemworldofChina,thegiantchildofourcentury.Understandthisnetworkofcities—Nylonkong,wecallit—andyouunderstandourtime.
