band.Theywouldplayatlocaldancesandonafewoccasions

wouldplayforthelocalradiostation.Heoftentoldushow

hehadauditionedandearnedapositioninabandthatfeatured

PatsyClineastheirleadsinger.Hetoldthefamilythatafter

hewashiredheneverwentback.Dadwasaveryreligiousman.

Hestatedthattherewasalotofdrinkingandcursingtheday

ofhisauditionandhedidnotwanttobearoundthattypeof

environment.

Occasionally,Dadwouldgetouthismandolinandplayforthe

family.Wethreechildren:Trisha,MonteandI,GeorgeJr.,

wouldoftensingalong.SongssuchastheTennesseeWaltz,

HarborLightsandaroundChristmastime,thewell-known

renditionofSilverBells."SilverBells,SilverBells,its

Christmastimeinthecity“wouldringthroughoutthehouse.

OneofDadsfavoritehymnswas“TheOldRuggedCross”.We

learnedthewordstothehymnwhenwewereveryyoung,andwould

singitwithDadwhenhewouldplayandsing.Anothersongthat

wasoftensharedinourhousewasasongthataccompaniedthe

WaltDisneyseries:DaveyCrockett.Dadonlyhadtohearthe

songtwicebeforehelearneditwellenoughtoplayit."Davey,

DaveyCrockett,KingoftheWildFrontier"wasafavoritesong

forthefamily.Heknewweenjoyedthesongandtheprogramand

wouldoftengetoutthemandolinaftertheprogramwasover.

Icouldnevergetoverhowhecouldplaythesongssowellafter

onlyhearingthemafewtimes.Ilovedtosing,butInever

learnedhowtoplaythemandolin.ThisissomethingIregret

tothisday.

Dadlovedtoplaythemandolinforhisfamilyheknewwe

enjoyedsinging,andhearinghimplay.Hewas1ikethat.Ifhe

couldgivepleasuretoothers,hewould,especiallyhisfamily.

Hewasalwaysthere,sacrificinghistimeandeffortstosee

thathisfamilyhadenoughintheirlife.Ihadtomatureinto

amanandhavechildrenofmyownbeforeIrealizedhowmuch

hehadsacrificed.

IjoinedtheUnitedStatesAirForceinJanuaryof1962.

WheneverIwouldcomehomeonleave,IwouldaskDadtoplay

themandolin.Nobodyplayedthemandolinlikemyfather.He

couldtouchyoursoulwiththetonesthatcameoutofthatold

mandolin.Heseemedtoshinewhenhewasplaying.Youcouldsee

hisprideinhisabilitytoplaysowellforhisfamily.

WhenDadwasyounger,heworkedforhisfatheronthefarm.

Hisfatherwasafarmerandsharecroppedafarmforthemanwho

ownedtheproperty.In1950,ourfamilymovedfromthefarm.

Dadhadgainedemploymentatthelocallimestonequarry.When

thequarryclosedinAugustof1957,hehadtoseekother

employment.HeworkedforOwensYachtCompanyinDundalk,

MarylandandforToddSteelinPointofRocks,Maryland.While

workingatToddSteel,hewasinvolvedinanaccident.Hisjob

wastorol1angleironontoaconveyorsothatthewelders

fartheruptheproductionlinewouldhaveittocompletetheir

job.OnthisparticulardayDadgotthethirdindexfingerof

hislefthandmashedbetweentwopiecesofsteel.Thedoctor

whooperatedonthefingercouldnotsaveit,andDadendedup

havingthetipofthefingeramputated.Hedidntloseenough

ofthefingerwhereitwouldstophimpickingupanything,but

itdidimpacthisabilitytoplaythemandolin.

Aftertheaccident,Dadwasreluctanttoplaythemandolin.

Hefeltthathecouldnotplayaswellashehadbeforethe

accident.WhenIcamehomeonleaveandaskedhimtoplayhe

wouldmakeexcusesforwhyhecouldntplay.Eventually,wewould

wearhimdownandhewou1dsay“Okay,butremember,Icanthold

downonthestringsthewayIusedto"or"Sincetheaccident

tothisfingerIcantplayasgood”.Forthefamilyitdidnt

makeanydifferencethatDadcouldntplayaswell.Wewerejust

gladthathewouldplay.Whenheplayedtheoldmandolinitwould

carryusbacktoacheerful,happiertimeinourlives."Davey,

InAugustof1993myfatherwasdiagnosedwithinoperablelung

cancer.Hechosenottoreceivechemotherapytreatmentssothat

hecouldliveouttherestofhislifeindignity.Aboutaweek

beforehisdeath,weaskedDadifhewouldplaythemandolin

forus.Hemadeexcusesbutsaid"okay”.Heknewitwould

probablybethelasttimehewouldplayforus.Hetunedupthe

oldmandolinandplayedafewnotes.WhenIlookedaround,there

wasnotadryeyeinthefamily.Wesawbeforeusaquiethumble

manwithaninnerstrengththatcomesfromknowingGod,and

livingwithhiminones1ife.Dadwouldneverplaythemandolin

forusagain.Wefeltatthetimethathewouldnthaveenough

strengthtoplay,andthatmakesthememoryofthatdayeven

stronger.Dadwasdoingsomethinghehaddoneallhislife,

andhigherbondofunion.Mencanthink,feel,andsympathize

witheachotherthroughtheirfavoriteauthor.Theyliveinhim

together,andheinthem.

Agoodbookisoftenthebesturnofalifeenshriningthe

bestthatlifecouldthinkout;fortheworldofamanslife

bestbooksaretreasuriesofgoodwords,thegoldenthoughts,

companionsandcomforters.

mostlastingproductsofhumaneffort.Templesandstatues

decay,butbookssurvive.Timeisofnoaccountwithgreat

thoughts,whichareasfreshtodayaswhentheyfirstpassed

throughtheirauthorsminds,agesago.Whatwasthensaidand

thoughtstillspeakstousasvividlyaseverfromtheprinted

page.Theonlyeffectoftimehavebeentosiftoutthebad

products;fornothinginliteraturecanlongsurviveebutwhat
