Soon,groupsofstudentsfirstlyfromEdinburghUniversity,andlaterfromtheuniversitiesof

OxfordandCambridge,DurhamandBirminghamweremakingthejourneytotheScottishcapital

eachsummertoperformtheaterbylittle-knownwritersofplaysinsmallchurchhallstothepeople

ofEdinburgh.

Todaythe“Fringe",oncelessrecognized,hasfaroutgrownthefestivalwitharound1,500

performancesoftheater,musicanddanceoneveryoneofthe21daysitlasts.Andyetasearlyas

1959,withonly19theatergroupsperforming,somesaiditwasgettingtoobig.

Apaidadministratorwasfirstemployedonlyin1971,andtodaythereareeightadministrators
