Asisknowntoall,isthemostfamousnovelofThomasHardy.Tesscomesfromafarmer’sfamily,theDurbeyfields.onedayherfather,JohnDurbeyfiedlearnsthattheyaredescendedfromtheD’Urbervilles,anancientfamily.HermotherurgesTesstoclaimkinshipwiththeremainingD’Urbervilles,sothatTesscouldmarryagentleman.Unwillingly,thegirlcomesincontactwiththeStoke,D’Urbervilles.ThereshemeetsAlecD’Urbervilles.Havingreceivedajoboftendingtochickens,TessstaysintheD’Urbervilles.BeforelongtherichbutguilefulAlecmanagestoseducethegirlandmakeherpregnant.Beinghumiliatedandresolute,Tessreturnshome,andgivesbirthtothechild,whoiscalledSorrowbutdiessoon.Withoutfinancialsupport,Tesshastoleavehomeandgoestoworkatadistantfarm,whereshemeetsAngelclaire.AfterAngelpersistentpursuitofTess,thetwofallinlove.Intheweddingnight,TessadmitsaboutAlecD’Urbervillesandthechild.Shebegsforforgiveness,butAngelleavesherindisgust.Tessagainreturnshomealone,onlyfindthatherfamilyremainsimpoverishedandsheevenhasnoplacetostay.Inthemeantime,AlecD’Urbervillesappearsagain.Hepromisestosupportherfamily,onlyasameanstomakeTessdependent.Attheendofhope,thegirljumpsintothetrapoftheshamelessman.However,Angelclaire,whoisremorsefulforhismercilessnesscomesback,whichmakesTessevenmoredesperate.AfterAngelleaves,shekillsAlec.ThenshefollowsAngelandescapewithhim.Theymanagetohideforawhileinawoodbeforesheisarrested.Sheishangedlater.

ThecauseofTess’stragedyhasalwaysbeentheconcernofpeople,suchabeautiful,nobleandpurewomanasTessshouldsufferinevitableruin.Whatleadstohertragicdestiny?Whokilledher?Ican’tdoverywellinanalysisthenovel.Idon’tknowclearlyhowthetimeshelivedinaffectherlife.Idohaveanunderstandingofthenovelbymyself.AlecandAngelwhoarethetwopeopleverycloselyrelatedtoTess’sfate.IthinkfierceAlecplayedaveryimportantroleinkillingTess,butinfact,itwashypocriticalAngelwhokilledTessindirectlybutmorecruelly.
