TheVietnamWar

VietnamwasruledbyFrance,aspartofFrenchIndochina,fromthemid-19thcentury.Itbecameindependentin1954astwocountries,thepro-WesternSouthVietnamandtheCommunistNorthVietnam.AttemptstounitethetwocountriesledtotheVietnamWarandeventuallysucceededin1975.

Americaninvolvement

TheUnitedStateswasfullyinvolvedintheVietnamWar,whichhadadeepandlastingeffectonUSsocietyandonthewaythatAmericansthoughtabouttheirowncountry.Atfirstmostpeoplesupportedthewar,butoppositiongraduallyincreased,especiallyamongcollegestudentsandotheryoungpeople,asmoreUSsoldierswerekilled,andasthetelevisionnewsshowedterriblepicturesofordinaryVietnamesepeoplebeingkilledandinjured.

Endingofthewar

Therewerelargeprotestmarches,manypopularprotestsongs,andthesaying“makelove,norwar”becamepopular.MilitaryfailuresandlossofpublicsupporteventuallyforcedthegovernmenttobringUSforcesbackfromVietnamin1973.

Aftergraduation,ForresthadenlistedintothearmforcetofightintheVietnamWar.Onceatime,histroopwasattacked,andallmembershadtowithdraw.WhenForrestranfarawayfromthedangerousregion,hefoundhisbestfriendinthetroop,Babwasleftbehind.Withnohesitation,heranbacktorescueBab.
