Politics.Everyelectionyear,thousandsofpoliticalcandidatesusetelevisionintheircampaigns.Theybuycommercialtimetourgevoterstosupportthem.Theyalsoappearindebateswithothercandidatesandanswerinterviewers’questionsabouttheirviews.Televisionplaysitsgreatestroleinpresidentialraces.BeforeTV,presidentialcandidatestriedtomakepersonalappearancesandspeechesinasmanycitiesandstatesaspossible.Today,manycandidatesreachmorevotersthroughasingletelevisionappearancethanthroughallthein-personcampaigningtheydo.
Themostwidelyusedformofpoliticaladvertisingintelevisionisthespotannouncement.Spotannouncementsarepoliticalmessagesthatlast10to90seconds.Newsprogramsoftenteleviseonlyasentenceortwo,calledasoundbite,fromacandidate’sremarks.Thesecontrastsharplywiththelongpoliticalspeechesthataretypicaloftraditionalin-personcampaigning.
Televisiondoesmuchtopromoteinterestinpoliticsandpoliticalissues.ButpoliticaladvertisingonTValsodrawscriticism.Criticssayspotannouncementsaretooshorttoallowcandidatestodiscussissues.Instead,candidatesusethetimetopresentoversimplifiedstatements.Criticsalsoclaimthat,becausetelevisiontimeissoexpensive,TVcampaigninggivesunfairadvantagetothecandidateswiththemostmoney.
