ShackletonErnestHenryShackletonwasbornonFebruary15th1874inIreland.Thesecondoftenchildren,hewasbroughtupinLondon,attendingDulwichCollegebeforejoiningtheMerchantNavyaged16.Shackletonwascertified①asaMasterMarinerin1898andwasacceptedin1901ontheDiscoveryexpeditiontoAntarcticaledbyRobertScott.Hewaschosentoaccompany②ScottonthemostsouthernmarchtowardstheSouthPoleforresearchpurposes,returninghomeduetoillhealth.OnJanuary1st1908heledacrewontheNimrodexpedition,sailingtoAntarcticaagain.TrekkingtowardstheSouthPoleinthequesttobefirst,theyreachedtheclosesteverachievedbeforeturningbackorfacingcertaindeath.Itwasaraceagainststarvation③buttheymadeitbacktotheshipjustintimetoreturntoEngland.OnhisreturnhewasgreetedasaherobyKingEdwardⅦ.AftertheSouthPolewasreachedbyRoaldAmundsenin1912hedecidedtoplanforthelastgreatAntarcticexpedition,tocrossthecontinent.
