culturaltreasuresthateducatedandunitedpeoplearoundcommonbeliefs.

Althoughthelinebetweenmythandlegendisoftenblurred(变得模糊),

mythstendtofocusonsuperhumananimalsandgods,whereaslegendsglorify

aherooragreateventandusuallycontainanelementoftruth.Likemyths,

legendsbecamepopularstorieshandeddownfromgenerationtogeneration

Inallcultures,story-tellingwasawayoftransmittingbeliefs,customs,and

moralprinciplestopeopleofallageswhocoldneitherreadnorwrite.

Story-tellingwasalsoanimportantformofentertainmentatthelevelofthe

familyandthevillage.Withtheadvent(appearance/coming)ofradioand

television,however,story-tellinghaveallbutdisappeared.Insteadofgathering

aroundanindividualcapableofrememberingallkindsofwonderfuland

amusingtales,peoplenowprefertositinfrontofaTVset.

Itismainlyintheirwrittenformthatwecanstillenjoytraditionalmyths,

legends,fablesandfolktales.Inreadingstoriesfromdifferentcultures,wecan

discoversomeoftheuniversal(普遍的)characteristicsofhumankind.The

trickster(骗子,恶作剧的精灵),forinstance,isaclever,deceitfulandgreedy

individualwhoinspiresadmirationbutwhomustbetaughtalesson.

Insomeculturesheappearsasamonkey,inothersatortoiseoraraven(渡
