EnvironmentalRisksEnvironmentalRisksIncreasedWeedinessGeneTransferChangeinHerbicideUsePatternsSquanderingofValuablePestSusceptibilityGenesPoisonedWildlifeCreationofNew(orWorse)VirusesIncreasedWeedinessSeriousweedproblemscanresultwhenaplantisintroduced—eitheraccidentallyorintentionally—intoanenvironmentwhereitinhibitscropyieldsordisruptsecosystems.GEhasthepotentialtocreateweedproblemsbyaddingtraitsthatenableaplanttothriveunaidedinenvironmentswhereitbecomesanewweed.Oneexamplewouldbedrought-tolerantturfgrassorswitchgrass,whichmaybecomeinvasiveindrierenvironments.GeneTransferNovelgenesengineeredintocropscaneasilymoveviapollentowildorweedyrelativesofthosecropsthatmaybegrowingnearby.Thenewtraitsmightconferonthoserelativestheabilitytothriveinunwantedplaces.SeveralwildrelativesofcropsintheU.S.,suchasjointedgoatgrass(awheatrelative),arealreadyseriousweeds—andgenetransfercouldexacerbatethisproblem.(Arelatedbutdistinctproblemisgenecontaminationofnon-GEcropsbynearbyGEcrops.)ChangeinHerbicideUsePatternsWidespreaduseofherbicide-tolerantcropshasledtotherapidevolutionofresistancetoherbicidesinweedsasaresultofincreasedexposuretotheherbicide.Astheseherbicidesbecomelesseffective,farmersmayincreasetheiruseofolder,moretoxicherbicides,withresultingenvironmentalharm.SquanderingofValuablePestSusceptibilityGenesManyinsectscontaingenesthatrenderthemsusceptibletopesticides.Thesegenesareavaluablenaturalresourcebecausetheyallowpesticidestoremaineffective."Btcrops,"whicharegeneticallyengineeredtocontainagenefortheBacillusthuringiensis(Bt)toxin—oneofnature'smostvaluablepesticides—threatenthecontinuedsusceptibilityofpeststotheBttoxin.SquanderingofValuablePestSusceptibilityGenesBecausethecropsproducethetoxinthroughoutthelifecycleoftheplant,pestsareconstantlyexposedtoit.ThiscontinuousexposureselectsfortherareresistancegenesinthepestpopulationandintimewillrendertheBtpesticideuseless,unlessspecificmeasuresareinstitutedtoavoidthedevelopmentofsuchresistance.(BtresistancehasalreadybeenobservedPoisonedWildlifeAdditionofforeigngenestoplantscouldalsohaveseriousconsequencesforwildlifeinanumberofcircumstances.Forexample,engineeringcropplants,suchastobaccoorrice,toproduceplasticsorpharmaceuticalscouldendangermiceordeerwhoconsumecropdebrisleftinthefieldsafterharvesting.Fishthathavebeenengineeredtocontainmetal-sequesteringproteins(suchfishhavebeensuggestedaslivingpollutionclean-updevices)couldbeharmfulifconsumedbyotherfishorraccoons.CreationofNew(orWorse)VirusesOneofthemostcommonapplicationsofgeneticengineeringistheproductionofvirus-tolerantcrops.Suchcropsareproducedbyengineeringcomponentsofvirusesintotheplantgenomes.Forreasonsnotwellunderstood,plantsproducingviralcomponentsontheirownareresistanttosubsequentinfectionbythoseviruses.CreationofNew(orWorse)VirusesSuchplants,however,poseotherrisksofcreatingneworworsevirusesthroughtwomechanisms:recombination,inwhichplant-producedviralgenesandgenesofincomingvirusesrecombinetoproducevirusesthataremorevirulentorcaninfectawiderrangeofhoststhantheparentviruses;andtranscapsidation,inwhichplant-producedv
