WorldwideNavigationWarningService(WWNWS)TheWWNWSisacoordinatedglobalserviceestablishedthroughthejointeffortsoftheInternationalHydrographicOrganization(IHO)andtheInternationalMaritimeOrganization(IMO)forthepromulgationofnavigationalwarnings.ItisnowalsoanintegralpartoftheGlobalMaritimeDistressandSafetySystem(GMDSS).Theservicedividestheworldinto16NAVAREAs,identifiedbyRomannumerals.EachareaisundertheauthorityofanAreaCoordinatortowhomNationalCoordinatorspassinformationdeemedsuitableforpromulgationthroughouttheappropriateNAVAREA.l

RadioNavigationalWarnings(RNW)WithintheWWNWS,therearethreetypesofRadioNavigationalWarnings:NAVAREAWarnings,CoastalWarningsandLocalWarnings.

NavigationalWarningsHowever,WWNWSguidanceandcoordinationareinvolvedwithonlyNAVAREAandCoastalWarningsand,ofthelatter,onlywiththoseCoastalWarningswhicharebroadcastundertheinternationallycoordinatedservicesusingNAVTEX,orinlieuofNAVTEX,theInternationalSafetyNETservice,astheirprincipalmeansoftransmission.Manynavigationalwarningsareofatemporarynature,butothersremaininforceforseveralweeksandmaybesucceededbyNoticestoMariners.DetailsofallRadioNavigationalWarningssystemsaregiveninAdmiraltyListofRadioSignalsVolume3.

NavigationalWarnings

NAVAREAWarningsNAVAREAWarningsareconcernedwithinformationwhichoceangoingmarinersrequirefortheirsafenavigation.Thisincludes,inparticular,failurestoimportantaidstonavigationaswellasinformationwhichmayrequirechangestoplannednavigationalroutes.ThesewarningsarebroadcastonSafetyNETandmayalsobebroadcastfromappropriateNAVTEXstations.ThemessagesareinEnglish.l

CoastalWarningsCoastalWarningsarepromulgatedbyaNationalCoordinatortoensuresafenavigationwithinaregion,outtoabout250milesfromthecoast.Theyshouldnormallyprovidesufficientinformationforsafenavigationtoseawardofthefairwaybuoyorpilotstationandshouldnotberestrictedtohazardsinornearthemainshippinglanes.ThesewarningsarebroadcastonNAVTEXwheretheregionisservicedbyaNAVTEXstation,otherwiseonSafetyNETwhereSafetyNETisbeingusedinlieuofNAVTEX.TheymayalsobebroadcastbyothermeanssuchasVHFR/TnotcoveredbytherequirementsoftheGMDSS.ThemessagesareinEnglish,butmayalsobeinthelocallanguage.NavigationalWarnings
