Nianhadnotcomedownthemountaintocauseanytroublethereafter.

ThiseventuallybecomesatraditionofChinaandleadstothecelebrationforanotheryearofsafelife.Chinesepeoplecelebrateinremembranceofthislegendandstillcontinuestilltoday!

ChineseNewYearstartswiththeNewMoononthefirstdayofthenewyearandendsonthefullmoon15dayslater.The15thdayofthenewyeariscalledtheLanternFestival,whichiscelebratedatnightwithlanterndisplaysandchildrencarryinglanternsinaparade.

TheChinesecalendarisbasedonacombinationoflunarandsolarmovements.Thelunarcycleisabout29.5days.InordertocatchupwiththesolarcalendartheChineseane*tramonthonceeveryfewyears(sevenyearsoutofa19-yearcycle).Thisisthesameasaddingane*tradayonleapyear.Thisiswhy,accordingtothesolarcalendar,theChineseNewYearfallsonadifferentdateeachyear.

NewYearsEveandNewYearsDayarecelebratedasafamilyaffair,atimeofreunionandthanksgiving.ThecelebrationwastraditionallyhighlightedwithareligiousceremonygiveninhonorofHeavenandEarth,thegodsofthehouseholdandthefamilyancestors.
