includedintheWorldHeritageListofUNESCO.33historicalsitesarealongtheroadintotaland22ofthemdistributeinShaanxi,Henan,GansuandXinjiang

ofChina.FerdinandvonRichthofen(1833-1905)wasaGermangeographerandscientist,whoproducedamajorworkonChina.AfterworkingasageologistintheUS,heundertookmanytripstoChina.Creditedwithcoiningtheterm“SilkRoad”in1877,hewasalsoresponsibleforstandardizingthepracticesofdescribingandmappingaregion.CultureTheroadisnotonlyanancientinternationaltraderoute,butalsoasplendidculturalbridgelinkingtheculturesofChina,CentralAsia,India,Persia,Arabia,Turkey,Greece,andItaly.TheFourGreatInventionsofChinaandreligionsoftheWestwereintroducedintotheircounterparts.

HistoryThehistoryoftheoldSilkRoadbeganwiththeexplorationsofZhangQianduringtheHanDynasty,andcontinueduntiltheMingDynasty---aperiodofsome1,700years.RouteThisancientroadbeginsatChang'an(nowXi'an),thenbywayoftheHexiCorridor,anditreachesDunhuang,whereitdividesintothree,theSouthernRoute,CentralRouteandNorthernRoute.ThethreeroutesspreadallovertheXinjiangUygurAutonomousRegion,andthentheyextendasfarasPakistan,India

andevenRome.
