isbynomeansconsideredtobeagreatexplorer,hisnamewill

probablyremainimmortal,foronNovember21st,1964,the

greatestbridgeintheworldwasnamedafterhim.

TheVerrazanoBridge,whichwasdesignedbyOthmarAmmann,

joinsBrooklyntoStatenIsland.Ithasaspanof4260feet.

Thebridgeissolongthattheshapeoftheearthhadtobetaken

intoaccountbyitsdesigner.Twogreattowerssupportfourhuge

cables.ThetowersarebuiItonimmenseunderwaterplatforms

madeofsteelandconcrete.Theplatformsextendtoadepthof

over100feetunderthesea.Thesealonetooksixteenmonths

tobuild.Abovethesurfaceofthewater,thetowersriseto

aheightofnearly700feet.Theysupportthecablesfromwhich

thebridgehasbeensuspended.Eachofthefourcablescontains

26,108lengthsofwire.Ithasbeenestimatedthatifthebridge

werepackedwithcars,itwouldstillonlybecarryingathird

ofitstotalcapacity.However,sizeandstrengtharenotthe

onlyimportantthingsaboutthisbridge.Despiteitsimmensity,

itisbothsimpleandelegant,fulfillingitsdesigner(sdream

tocreate'anenormousobjectdrawnasfaintlyaspossible).
