Schellenbergrecruited132six-year-oldchildrenforformallessons.First,thechildrentook

anintelligencetestandwereratedforsocialmaturity.Next,thechildrenwererandomly

assignedtooneoffourexperimentalconditions.Twoweremusicgroups;onereceivedpiano

lessonsandtheothervoicelessons.Thethirdgrouptookdramalessons—aconditionthatshed

lightonwhetherintellectualgainswereuniquetomusicalexperiences.Thefourthgroup—a

no-lessonscontrol—wasofferedmusiclessonsthefollowingyear.After36weeksoflessons,

thechildren'sintelligenceandsocialmaturitywereassessedagain.

Allfourgroupsshowedgainsinintelligence-testperformance,probablybecausethe

participantshadjustenteredgradeschool,whichusuallyleadstoanincreaseinintelligencetest

scores.Butthetwomusicgroupsconsistentlygainedmorethanthecontrolgroups.Their

advantage,thoughjustafewpoints,extendedacrossmanymentalabilities,includingverbal

andspatialskillsandspeedofthinking.Atthesametime,onlythedramagroupimprovedin

socialmaturity.

Insum,active,sustainedmusicalexperiencescanleadtosmallincreasesinintelligence

among6-year-olds.Butotherenrichmentactivities,suchasreading,science,math,andchess
