Furthermore,Maerskhasceasedtoreleaseortosubletships,exceptforatrioof5,500TEUunitstobereleasedinmid-2008,forwhichthecharterswerenotrenewed.Tothecontrary,itistorecoverattheendofApril,the4,546TEUHIJAZ(exMAERSKDIADEMA–aliasVIKTORIAWULFF),whichhasbeensublettoUASCforthepast18months.Maerskhasalsobeenactiveagainonthechartermarket,althoughexclusivelyforshipsunder2,100TEU.Duringthefirstfourmonthsof2008,thecarrierhaseithercharteredinorextendedsome40ships.Ithasalsoextendedsometenoptionsatadvantageousrates,halfoftheminthe2,500-4,500TEUrange.

However,thelinehasbeeninactiveontheorderingsideforawhile,althoughinthisrespect,itisfarfromalone.Carriersareobviouslytakingabreathafterlastyear’shecticorderingactivity,withatotalof3.6MTEUorderedforacontractualvalueofUSD53bn,accordingtoAlphalinerfigures.
