Iamcertainthatsomepeople,particularlythosewhocitetraditionalresearchwilldisagreewiththisscenario.Themostlikelyargumentisthat"leading"kidsonaplaygroundisnotreallyleadership.Isubmitthatonekeyaspectofleadershipisevokinginothersthedesiretofollow.Afterall,withoutfollowers,leadersarejustpeopleoutforawalk.
Ibelieveonereasonthatmanypeopleargueagainstbornleadersisthatitwouldseemtodoomotherstobeingpermanentfollowers.Manypeopleinsistthatitmustbeoneortheother,bornleadersvs.developedleaders,andsincethereareclearlymanydevelopedleaders,thentherecanbenosuchthingasbornleaders.Inmyopinion,acceptingbothpathwaystoleadershipismorelogical,andlessnarrowminded.Itisalsoeasilyobservable.
Leadershipisoftenattributabletocharisma,somethingthatcannotbetaught.Yes,thereareleaderswhoarenotcharismatic.Butthereareleaders--verysuccessfulleaders--whoderivemuchoftheirleadershipsuccessfromcharismaalone.Ibelievethemostdynamicandeffectiveleadersarethosewhopossesthenaturalinstinctsforleadershipandthenworktodevelopleadershipskillsthroughrefinementandtraining.
