3.Bedbugsusedtobesolelyaresidentialproblem,buttheyareshowingupincommercialsettings,andnotjustinplaceswithbedslikehotels,nursinghomesandapartmentcomplexes.Increasingly,pestcontrolcompaniesreportfindingbedbugsinofficebuildings,movietheaters,clothingstores,foodplants,factoriesandevenairplanes.Fortheaffectedbusinesses,theexpensecanrunintothehundredsofthousandsofdollars.Forthecompaniesthatdealwiththescourge,itisabonanza,withbusinessdoublingandtripling.
4.Thecostsofcopingwithbedbugsaresignificant,andtheyarenotcoveredbymostinsurancepoliciesbecausetheyareseenasamaintenanceissue.Hiringbedbug-sniffingdogs,whichisconsideredthemosteffectivedetectiontechnique,costsabout$250fora1,200-square-footretailstoreandasmuchas$10,000foramillion-square-footdepartmentstore."Tostayaheadofbedbugs,Irecommendusingthedogstodoathoroughinspectionquarterly/'saidPepePeruyero,chiefexecutiveofacompanyinFloridathattrainsbedbug-sniffingdogsandoffersinspectionsforlargebuildingslikedepartmentstoresandschooldormitories.However,headded,manycustomerscannotafforditandinsteadchoosetorelyonthevigilanceofemployeesafteraninitialdogcheckcomesupclean.

9.Thereisalsoarealfearofliability.Bedbug-relatedlawsuitshavebeenincreasingsince2003,andseverallawyersnowadvertisethemselvesasspecialistsinsuchlitigation.TypicalisarecentcasefiledagainstalargePennsylvaniafurnitureestablishmentbyawomanwhocontendsthatfurnituresheboughttherehadbedbugs.Incourtdocuments,shesaidshewantedatleast$50,000incompensationbecausethebedbugsnotonlygaveheritchyweltsbutalsocausedhertoloseherhairandherjobasanattendantatanursinghome."Mostbedbugsuitsaresettledoutofcourtforlessthan$5,000,butI’veseendamagesgoashighassixfigures,”saidChristianHardigree,associateprofessorattheCollegeofHotelAdministrationattheUniversityofNevada,LasVegas,andalawyerwhohasconsultedonbedbugcasesinvolvinghotels,cruiseships,movietheatersandnursinghomes."Itcanbeanightmareforbusinessesbecausealotofclaimantsinthesecasesaretreatingthelitigationsystemlikealotteryandaregoingafterthebigwin."
