While there are certainly many more varieties of English, American English and British

9、English are the two varieties that are taught in most programs of teaching non-native speakers. Generally, it is agreed that no one version is correct, however, there are certainly preferences in use. The three major differences between American and British English are: pronunciation differences in

10、both vowel and consonants, as well as stress and intonation; vocabularydifferences in nouns and verbs, especially phrasal verb usage; spellingdifferences are generally found in certain prefix and suffix forms. The most important rule of thumb is to try to be consistent in your usage. If you decide t

11、hat you want to use American English spellings, then be consistent in your spelling. In another word, the color of the orange is also its flavourcolor is American spelling and flavour is British. This is of course not always easyor possible. The following guide is meant to point out the principal di

12、fferences between these two varieties of English. Firstly, use of the present perfect in British English. The present perfect is used to express an action that has occurred in the recent past and has an effect on the present moment. For example, Ive lost my key. Can you help me look for it? In Ameri

13、can English the following is also possible: I lost my key. Can you help me look for it? In British English the above would be considered incorrect. However, both forms are generally accepted in standard American English. Other differences involving the use of the present perfect in British English a

14、nd simple past in American English include already, just and yet. In British English Ive just had lunch. Ive already seen that film. Have you finished your homework yet? In American English: I just had lunch or Ive just had lunch, Ive already seen that film or I already saw that film. Have your fini

15、shed your homework yet? or Did you finish your homework yet? Secondly, possession. There are two forms to express possession in English. Have or Have got: Do you have a car? Have you got a car? He hasnt got any friends. He doesnt have any friends. She has a beautiful new home. Shes got a beautiful n

While both forms are correct and accepted in both British and American English, have got, have you got, he hasnt got, etc. are generally the preferred forms in British English while most speakers of American English employ the have: do you have, he doesnt have, etc. Thirdly, the verb get. T

17、he past participle of the verb get is gotten in American English. For example, hes gotten much better at playing tennis. In British English, they say hes got much better at playing tennis. Fourthly, vocabulary. Probably the major difference between British and American English lies in the choice of

18、vocabulary. Some words mean different things in the two varieties, for example, mean: in American Englishangry, bad humored, while in British Englishnot generous, tight fisted; rubber: in American Englishcondom, while in British Englishtool used to erase pencil markings. There are many more examples

19、, too many for me to list here. If there is a difference in usage, your dictionary will note the different meanings in its definition of the term. Many vocabulary items are also used in one form and not in the other. One of the best examples of this is the terminology used for automobiles. American

Once again, your dictionary should list whether the term is used in British English or American English. Fifthly, prepositions. There are also a few differences in preposition

21、 use, including the following: American Englishon the weekend, British Englishat the weekend; American Englishon a team, British Englishin a team; American Englishplease write me soon, British Englishplease write to me soon. Sixthly, past simple/past participle. The following verbs have two acceptab

22、le forms of the past simple/past participle in both American and British English, burn, burnt or burned, dream, dreamt or dreamed, learn, learnt or learned, smell, smelt or smelled, spell, spelt or spelled, spill, spilt or spilled, spoil, spoilt or spoiled. However, the irregular form is generally m

23、ore common in British English (the first form of the two) and the regular form is more common to American English. Seventhly, spelling. 37、writing, has been promoted by educators in English-speaking countries. They are: unity, coherence, emphasis, development and clarity. While these good old values are still relevant, todays discussion of good writing focuses on a different set of concepts. Ill define good writing using different term

38、s: good writing is good thinking; good writing involves thoughtful revision; good writing is directed toward an audience; good writing achieves a clear purpose; good writing expresses ideas clearly. Firstly, good writing is good thinking. Good thinking leads to good writing, and muddy thinking can o

39、nly result in muddy writing. As simple as that. Writing is a thinking process; it is not making a big deal out of nothing. Good writing should be substantive, really having things to say. Not only having things to say, but also having insightful things to say about the topic. This concept is particu

40、larly important for you non-native speakers of English. You may tend to be overly concerned with being correct in grammar, spelling and mechanics. While good writing is expected to be free from grammatical and other errors, it is worth repeating here that good writing is not good grammar or vice ver

41、sa. At the advanced level, you should be much more concerned with higher and more important issues of writing in English. If you were excited at all by a piece of writing, most likely, it was for one or a combination of the following reasons: 1)because it enlightens you or sheds light on the subject

42、; 2)because you have felt something similar but in a rather vague and superficial way; 3)because you have felt exactly the same, but have never been able to express yourself in such an effective and elegant manner. Secondly, good writing involves thoughtful revision. Although there are geniuses who

43、are such inspired writers that they can produce great writings at the spur of the moment without having to revise as much as one word, such geniuses are few and far between. For the overwhelming majority of writers, good writing is ninety-nine percent hard work and one percent inspiration. Experienc

44、ed writers subject their writings to numerous revisions before feeling satisfied. Lu Xun, the greatest modern Chinese writer, for example, talks about pacing pensively in the study for days searching for the right word. Thirdly, good writing is directed toward an audience. Notice the use of the word

45、 audience here: it usually refers to viewers and listeners, but now its reference has expanded to include readers too, particularly in discussions of writing. You should remember that what is appropriate for one kind of audience may not be appropriate for another. The intended audience determines yo

46、ur choice of words, your sentence length and patterns, the overall tone, the details that would be included in your writing, etc. Fourthly, good writing achieves a clear purpose. Good writing must achieve your intended purpose. If you want to write about how to make Jiaozi, your reader, after readin

47、g your writing, should get everything he or she needs to know about how to make Jiaozi, from the necessary ingredients to step by step instructions. If your purpose is to convey the sublime and soul-awakening beauty of the morning sun bursting out of the horizon in the misty Huangshan Mountain in An

48、hui Province, you should describe it in such a way that your readers should be able to visualize the scenery. If you want to propose that China adopt a legal drinking age, you should make it clear to the Peoples Congress why such a law is necessary, what it should be, how to implement such a law, an

49、d so forth. Last but not least, good writing expresses ideas clearly. Good writing reflects good thinking, and good thinking needs to be put in precise, concise and lucid prose. An important task for revision is to trim all the deadwood, pruning all the redundancies, wordiness, and confusing and mis

50、leading ambiguities. For non-native speakers, to express yourself clearly often involves making your writing more idiomatic, reducing the level of negative interference of your native language and to bring your writing closer to English-speaking readers. Only when you can write clearly can you begin

51、 to think of developing a distinctive style. What kind of style you should develop or use depends on your temperament, your need, and such controlling factors as the subject you are writing about, the audience you are writing to, and the purpose you want to achieve. One style may be appropriate for

52、certain occasions but totally inappropriate for others. You would feel totally out of place if you go to a casual gathering of old friends dressed in expensive suit and tie, unless you want to appear snobbish and showy. 53、stra in the elegant Grand Capital Arts Center in loosely fit T-shirt and jeans? So far, we have discussed five characteristics of good writing.
