Beijing Olympics Volunteers in My EyesAs the 2008 Beijing Olympics draws near, China is also stepping up efforts in the recruitment of volunteers. Applications soon come from people of all walks of life But apart from enthusiasm and patience, a volunteer worker also needs other qualities, such as foreign language proficiency, driving skills, and first-aid knowledge, etc., depending on the nature of specific jobs (用现在分词结构代替定语从句).Being a volunteer worker for the Beijing Olympic Games is very meaningful (总述作者对奥运志愿者的看法即奥运志愿者的工作有意义). For the country, it saves the operating costs for the organizing committee. Though pre-event training entails large investments, volunteers contribution to the overall human resources is invaluable. Also for the individuals (与前面for the country相呼应,以 相同的结构说明这部分分两方面来讲), we can broaden our horizons through participation of this international pageant. For university students in particular (单独列出大学生群体,将个人原因这 部分具体化), Olympics volunteer work helps us to gain life experience and cultivate our sense of social responsibility. 下文讲奥运志愿者可能遇到的困难,但并不 是与前文对立,因此不宜用but, however等), besides a sense of honour and achievement, volunteer work is both time- and energy-consuming. The training and rehearsal alone can last for months, and one may have to sacrifice leisure time for this unpaid work both before and during the coming Olympics. However, for the successful convening of the games, such sacrifice is worthwhile, and I would like to be one of the Olympics volunteers then (作者认为做一名奥运志愿者还是很有意义的,因此结尾处话锋又通过however引出转折). The native com was of poor nutritional quality and gave a poor quantity of grain, while the hybrid com was of excellent quality and gave about three times as large a crop as the native variety. In the first year, half of the 84 farmers in the village planted the hybrid com and doubled the com production. Three years later, however, only three farmers planted the hybrid com. The others were planting the traditional variety. At the beginning of the project, the program leader studied the pattern of the natural relations of plants, animals, and people to each other and to their surroundings of the area and showed films demonstrating the superiority of the new corn. The farmers agreed that the hybrid com had great advantages. The size of the com confirmed these advantages. Why did they stop planting it? They complained that it wasnt good for cooking and they didnt like the flavor. Question 26: What does the program mentioned in the passage intend to do? He engaged a group of engineers to study the situation and make recommendations for improvement. The engineers suggested two alternative solutions: 1) adding more lifts of the same type; 2) replacing the existing lifts by faster ones. The manager decided that both alternative solutions were too expensive. So the firms psychologist offered to study the problem. He noticed that many people arrived at their offices feeling angry and impatient. The reason they gave was the length of time they had to wait for the lift. However, the psychologist was impressed by the fact that they had only had to wait a relatively short time. It occurred to him that the main reason for their annoyance was the fact that they had to stand by the lifts inactive. He suggested a simple, inexpensive solution to the manager. That is, to place a large mirror next to the lifts.Question 29: What did the engineers have to study? Question 30: According to the psychologist, why were people annoyed? .-Question 31: What problem did the psychologist solve by placing a large mirror next to the lifts? In colonial times settlers brought cattle and sheep with them to America from various parts of Europe. Because the settlers were busy building houses, clearing land and planting crops, they had little time to care for their animals. The cattle and sheep had to fend for themselves and females were bred to whatever bulls or rams in the neighborhood. These matings resulted in mixed breeds of cattle and sheep由at can hardly survive under adverse conditions. As the herds grew, they provided the settlers with meat as well as milk and wool. That was almost all the 19th century farm families needed, enough food for themselves and a little surplus that could be traded for things they couldnt produce at home. Now the survival of farm animals is not so precarious. Breeding is much more selective and specialized, pure-bred cattle and sheep predominate, some bred for their meat, others for their milk or wool. Question 32: What is the main topic of the passage? Question 33: Where did the early Massachusetts farm animals come from? Compared with those 36automatic machines, man appears both physically and (37)intellectually weaker. (38)Conquered by robots, man is no longer the master of the world. (39)Frightened by the dark future, some people object to the research on (40)artificial intellect. But could the (41)nightmare ever become reality? I believe the answer is no. Robots are not our enemy, but our friend. We have no reason to be afraid of them.Surely, nowadays, (42)advanced robots have replaced men in many respects. Especially under the working (43)circumstances too hard or dangerous for human beings, robots perform tasks superbly. (44)Robots ability lies in their brutal speed. enormous memory and the mechanical power. However, it is man who tells them how to apply these. Without program, robots are nothing but a highly complex device. (45)Besides the ability to think. robots lack another essential quality of human beings. that is. the ability to feel” to love and to hate. to hone and to despair. Therefore, no matter how advanced robots may become one day, (46)we should always keep one point in mind: Robots are a product and a tooI of human beings. Then how can a product be the master of its producer?Part IV Reading Comprehension (Reading in Depth) Section A文章梗概:文章主要讲述了远古时期海洋的形成。 England,Scotland and Wales compose the island of Great Britain. Several studies have shown. divulge是回答此题的关键。 71. D词义辨析题confer with sb. on/about sth.
