Lesson 15 Fifty pence worth of trouble Listen to the tape then answer the question below. Did George get anything for his fifty pence? What? Children always appreciate small gifts of money. Mum or dad, of course, provide a regular supply of pocket money, but uncles and ants are always a source of extra income. With some children, small sums go a long way. If fifty pence pieces are not exchanged for sweets, they rattle for months inside money boxes. Only very thrifty children manage to fill up a money box. For most of them, fifty pence is a small price to pay for a nice big bar of chocolate. My nephew, George, has a money box but it is always empty. Very few of the fifty pence pieces and pound coins I have given him have found their way there. I gave him fifty pence yesterday and advised him to save it. Instead he bought himself fifty pence worth of trouble. On his way to the sweet shop, he dropped his fifty pence and it bounced along the pavement and then disappeared down a drain. George took off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves and pushed is right arm through the drain cover. He could not find his fifty pence piece anywhere, and what is more, he could no get his arm out. A crowd of people gathered round him and a lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter, but George was firmly stuck. The fire brigade was called and two fire fighter freed George using a special type of grease. George was not too upset by his experience because the lady who owns the sweet shop heard about his troubles and rewarded him with large box of chocolates.New words and expressions 生词和短语 appreciatev. New words and expression 生词和短语Appreciate v.欣赏,感激- Thepoemistoodifficultformetoappreciate.- Iappreciateyourhelp.=bethankful/gratefultosb.- thankful = grateful(adj. 人行道stick(stuck, stuck) v. Stick v. - Stickthestampontheenvelop.stickwith 忠实于.(= be faithful to对. 旅,(消防)队firebrigade(消防队)= firedepartment = firestationgrease n. What?Childrenalwaysappreciatesmallgiftsofmoney.= Childrenalwaysappreciate pocketmoney assmall gifts. Mumordad,ofcourse,providearegularsupplyofpocketmoney,videaregularsupplyof. 定期地提供providesth forsb / providesb withsth 为某人提供某物- The villagers provided a regular supply of food for the soldiers.= The villagers provided the soldiers with a regular supply of food smallgiftsofmoney, pocketmoney, extraincome 都表示零花钱。 Withsomechildren, smallsumsgoalongway.此句暗含:with other children, small sums cant go a long way.goalongway 维持很久- Themoneywehavewillgoalongway.goalongwaytowards 对. Iffiftypencepiecesarenotexchangedforsweets,theyrattleformonthsinsidemoneyboxes. 来交换- The little boy exchanged his pen for candy.(candy n.糖果, 冰糖)rattle vt.(拟声词) 叮当作响 = tinkle(vi, vt (使)发玎玲声, (使)发出玎当声)roar 呼啸(重点突出老虎、狮子等大动物的吼叫声)- The car roar by me. / Listen, a lion is roaring.shoutat 大喊大叫 = barkatgrunt vi.(猪等)作呼噜声vt. 砰地关上, 砰地放下Onlyverythriftychildrenmanagetofillupamoneybox.fillup 装满1up:表示方向upto(表示到达目的地) - Sheranuptohim. Towards(表示朝某个方向) - Sherantowardshim. - Theychildrenrunupthegardenpathtogreettheirfather.3系动词+up(表示消费、摧毁、彻底、光、用完)- Drinkupyourwhisky. / Eatupyourvegetable.- Finishitup. - Thehouseisuptheriver. 6动词+up(表示包起来、封住、盖住)- buttonup扣上纽扣(- button your coat up 把外衣的纽扣扣上) - wrapup 包裹起来(wrap up the shoes with newspaper 用报纸把鞋子包起来)- lockup 锁起来(lock the house up 用锁把房子锁起来)- fastenup 拴紧, 钉牢, 锁牢 / save up 储蓄, 贮存- wash up 洗涤餐具, 洗手洗脸, 把冲上岸 / doup 重新整修, 包好Formostofthem, fiftypenceisasmallpricetopayforanicebigbarofchocolate.fiftypenceissmallprice to pay = fiftypenceisnotmuchtopaya smallprice =notmuchmoney 并不是很多- Forhim twothousanddollarsissmallprice topayforit.- Forme fivehundredYuanisnotasmallpricetopayforabicycle.Mynephew,George,hasamoneyboxbutitisalwaysempty.VeryfewofthefiftypencepiecesandpoundcoinsIhavegivenhimhavefoundtheirwaythere.pound coin n.1英镑硬币findtheirwaythere=reach 抵达, 到达, 找到自己的去处find ones way into/to- Riversfindtheirwaytothesea.- Howdidsuchafoolishstatementfinditswayintoprint?
