(20 points)请根据需要填入Script: Most people do not end up in their dream jobs, that is, arguably, precisely why millions of people spend long evenings escaping into TV. So one group of workplace series specializes in showing that dream jobs are not always so dreamy. ABC Family Channels Switched Up! in which two people trade jobs each week portrays the kind of working world we would live in if we all got the jobs we wanted when we were 7: a cheerleader swaps places with a cowgirl, a fire fighter with a DJ. But the episodes generally end on an amiable grass-is-always-greener note, as when a surfer trades with a sitcom writer and concludes, As a writer, Id be sad knowing that theres a lot of cool stuff going on in the world, and Im sitting there in a room telling jokes. For all the work on shows of this type, theres little labor at least, not in the blue-collar sense. This is partly because of our move from a manufacturing to a service economy. But service work is more telegenic; that trench warfare with a smile between hassled bargain seekers and stressed-out staff has drama built in. In her 2001 book Nickel and Dime, Barbara Ehrenreich went undercover to do a series of low-wage jobs on the theory that the best way to write about life at $6 an hour is to live it. If only Ehrenreich had pitched the idea to TLC. Instead, the network produced the more capitalist-friendly job-switch series Now Whos Boss? in which CEOs do drudge work at their own companies, critiqued by their employees. It may be a glorified infomercial, but its also a fascinating dip into the service economy, with all its margin pressures and enforced hilarity. The results are fun, satisfying and probably a decent learning experience. But while the CEOs perform tasks, they never really experience work the pressure to meet quotas, the fear of layoffs, the need to laugh at the bosses jokes because they ultimately hold the power. Instead, Now Whos Boss? answers its own titles question: the boss is the boss, even when bumbling a drink order or elbow deep in cleanser, and dont you forget it. 21.The episode of Switched Up! usually make those who swap jobs in the program feel that _.A.our dream jobs are never worth taking in a real lifeB.the grass is always greener on our own sideC.their dream jobs may not be an ideal oneD.being a cowgirl or a DI is the job most people once dreamed of请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:C22.What the surfer meant with his conclusion is that _.A.writing sitcoms is a funnier job than being a surferB.hed rather be a writer than a surferC.a sitcom writer does not know whats happening in the worldD.his present job is more suitable than being a sitcom writer请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:D23.The underlined word telegenic in Paragraph Two most probably means _.A.suitable for telegramsB.requiring more technologyC.far from modern societyD.closer to white-collars lives请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:A24.To write Nickel and Dime, Barbara Ehrenreich _.A.found that the average hourly cost of her life was $6B.tried some different jobs with a hourly wage of $6 secretlyC.created a theory about $6-an-hour jobsD.discovered that only those who earn $6 an hour were her inspiration请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:B25.According to the author, which of the following is NOT true?A.Ehrenreichs book and TLCs new series differ from each other in the groups of people they are concerned with.B.Series like Now Whos Boss? are a meaning probe into the pressure and cheerfulness in the service economy.C.The capitalists labor work in Now Whos Boss? might be appraised by employees.D.CEOs find programs like Now Whos Boss? a rare chance to experience blue-collars stress and worries.请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:请根据需要填入Script: Wherever we go and whatever we do, in the coffee shop or on the motorway, we count ourselves lucky if we escape queuing and its perversities. Whichever line we choose, it is often the one next to ours that seems to finish first. On the road, traffic jams seem to appear from nowhere and vanish just as mysteriously. While queues do not really have a malevolent streak, there is no denying they move in mysterious ways. Almost a century ago, to avoid customers having a lengthy wait to make calls, Franz Johanssen and Agner Erlang, two mathematicians working for the Copenhagen Telephone Company, developed a theory for predicting demand and how to meet it. This began what is now called queuing theory, whose formulae have two striking features. First, they are based on the laws of probability, a branch of mathematics notorious for its paradoxes. Worse still, the formulae are often highly non-linear, meaning that even tiny changes can have dramatic consequences. Take the most basic situation of people arriving at a coffee shop counter. Obviously, if they are served as fast as they turn up, the queue will stay the same length. Obvious but wrong: in fact, the queue will get ever longer. The reason is that people in the queue are not like water flowing in a pipe: they arrive at random and take varying amounts of time to be dealt with. A crowd can suddenly arrive while the family at the front is still fumbling for change. Unless people are served on average faster than they arrive, the backlog from one random group of arrivals may not clear before the next crowd arrives, making the queue still longer. But the most frustrating manifestations of queues stem from their nonlinearity, which can turn a minor problem into a huge delay. Mathematical models of traffic flow show that just one driver failing to maintain a steady speed can trigger phantom jams. Other drivers hit their brakes, sending waves of congestion back along the traffic, bringing whole stretches of motorway to a standstill. Then, just as quickly, a slight increase in speed makes the jam disappear again.26.The queuing theory studies _.A.why there are more anxious faces outside womens bathroom than mensB.how and why queues move in a mysterious wayC.what consequences could result from a tiny change in the queueD.how to predict and meet customers needs请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:B27.Johanssen and Erlangs theory was founded on _.A.the paradoxes of mathematicsB.a survey on their customersC.a branch of mathematicsD.a model about coffee shop queues请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:C28.According to the passage, the queue at a shop counter will stay the same length if _.A.water needed for the service keeps flowing in the pipeB.people in the queue have a fine grasp of the mathematics of queuesC.people arrive on average faster than they are servedD.there is no backlog from any random group of arrivals请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:D29.When something is nonlinear, it _.A.turns out to be even worse than the laws of probabilityB.is subjected to unexpected consequences due to just small changesC.makes queues become even longerD.adopts mathematical models to solve the problem of traffic jams请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:B30.Which of the following phenomena can be explained with nonlinearity?A.A slight speed increase may help solve the whole traffic jam.B.Some women commandeer mens bathrooms to avoid waiting in queues.C.Customers arrive at shops so suddenly that they are not served fast.D.Our queues in most trips to the supermarket are beaten by the one next to us.请根据需要填入Script:正确答案:AVocabulary and StructureDirections: Each of the following sentences is provided with four choices.
