人际意义反映了人们运用语言进行人际交往的本质。根据韩礼德系统功能语言 学的阐述，语言本质上是社会性的，它具有三大纯理功能，即概念功能，人际功 能和语篇功能。人际功能或说人际意义是三大纯理功能中一个重要组成部分：是 指人们如何使用语言跟他人进行互动，建立和维持一定的人际关系，并用语言影 响他人的行为，表达对世界的看法并引发他人的观点或改变他人的看法 ( h a l l i d a y , 1 9 9 4 ) 。 短篇小说白象似的群山选自海明威小说集没有女人的男人。人们曾经 从不同的视角对该小说做过研究，包括文体学的和语用学的视角等；但是迄今为 止笔者仍未发现从系统功能语言学角度对其做过研究。而且，以往有关人际意义 的语篇分析也主要局限于科技语篇，广告语篇，新闻语篇等。对文学语篇进行人 际意义分析的实例似显不足。因此，该研究尝试把相关系统功能语言学理论跟这 一特定的语篇联系起来进行人际意义的分析，探索实现人际意义的多种渠道，揭 示小说主人公对待彼此的态度，推断他们之间的关系及其性格特征；同时也试图 验证这一理论在文学语篇分析中的可行性。 根据韩礼德的观点，人际意义主要是通过语气和情态系统来实现的( 1 9 8 5 ) 。而 实际上，人际意义的实现方式是多样化的，而且，对于不同的体裁，人际意义的 实现手段也可能有所差异，正是这一点使得人际意义的理论框架得以扩充( 李战子， 2 0 0 1 ) 。另外，功能语言学中的人际功能理论并不是孤立的，它与其他两个功能， 即概念功能和语篇功能是密不可分的。比如，通常与概念功能相关的过程动词的 选择和与语篇功能相关的重复和替代等实现语篇连贯的手段同时对人际意义的实 现也起到一定的作用。因此，对该小说进行人际意义的分析也包括了这些实现手 段。 、对情态系统的分析则揭示了两人不同的性格特征。从某种程度上讲女孩 具有海明威笔下“主要人物”形象的典型性格特征：忍耐、坚韧、能外柔内刚地 冷静面对困境与考验。而男人则是“迷惘的一代”的典型代表：自私，冷漠，不 愿也不敢面对现实生活中的变化和挑战，逃避现实，推卸应该承担的责任。 3 、通过对语气与情态系统的综合分析，该研究还发现两主人公在对待彼此的 态度上存在一个逐渐转变过程。男人对待女孩及其话题的态度转变是明显的：由 最初的生硬漠视到后来的被动配合，消极应对；然而当话题引到“堕胎手术”时 他则喋喋不休地重复着虚伪的不负责任的许诺和保证，极力试图说服女孩接受手 术，以避免自己可能的责任。而女孩的态度则经历了由最初的挑起话题，曲意恳 求，到反复暗示以求同情，再到失望与无奈后所表现出的愤怒、冷静和独立。对 人际意义的分析所揭示的这种人物情态变化证实了语言中人际意义对人物塑造的 作用。 4 、对其他相关手段的分析，如过程动词的选择和重复等技巧的运用也进一步 证明了两人之间开始是支配与被支配或主动与被动的的关系。这些手段通常与概 念功能和语篇功能相关，它们同时表达的人际意义证明了语篇中的人际功能理论 并非是孤立的，而是与概念功能和语篇功能密切相关，在很多情况下甚至是交叉
