Ifwearebroughtfinallytoconcedetothedenialofthesefantasies,it

isonlybecausetheyhavebeenshowntobedangerous,notbecausetheyhave

givenwaytohighervaluesofbehavior.

Inwarmovies,certainly,itispossibletopresentviolencewithina

frameworkofresponsibility.Butthereisthedisadvantagethatmodernwar

isaco-operativeenterpriseinwhichviolenceislargelyimpersonalandheroism

belongstothegroupmorethantotheindividual.Theheroofawarmovie

ismostoftensimplyaleadersupposedtobebrave;youaresupposedtoget
