beganalifelongloveofcollecting.Withhisfirstacquisitions,Germanpicture

books,heembarked（着手，开始工作）ona78-yearsessionofexcessivespending.He

confessedtoaloveofthefinerthingsinlifeand,ashehadabottomless（不见底的）

purse,wouldneverdenyhimselfanythinghewanted.

In1887,whileWilliamwasatHarvardUniversity,hedecidedtotakeoverthe

smallnewspaper,theSanFranciscoExaminer,whichhisfatherhadacceptedas

paymentforagambling（赌博）debtseveralyearsearlier.Georgewouldhave

preferredthathissonbeinvolvedintheminingandranchinginterests,but

WilliamdeclinedthisofferandwasgivenownershipoftheExaminerinMarch

1887.Hewasdeterminedtoincreasethepopularity（普遍，流彳亍）ofthepaperand

acquirethebestequipmentandwritersavailable.

William,sresolvetosucceedinspiredhimtopublishjuicy（有趣的）talesofvice

andstoriesfullofdramaandmotivation（积极，性，动机）.In1895,hepurchasedthe

NewYorkMorningJournal,puttinghimindirectcompetitionwiththe

distinguished（杰出的）JosephPulitzerandacirculation（传播，发行）warbegan.

transformedasthescopeofthenewsbroadenedandbecamelessconservative.

Circulationsoaredasthepubliccouldgetenoughofthebannerheadlinesand

abundantillustrations.Atthetime,manypeoplebelievedWilliamactuallymight

haveinitiated（开始，发动）theSpanish-AmericanWartoencouragesales.According

toonereport,whenoneofhiscorrespondents,FrederickRemington,requestedto

returnfromHavana,WilliamrespondedthatifRemingtonwouldfurnishthe

pictures,Williamwouldfurnishthewar.Hewasoncequotedinaneditorialas

saying,“MakethenewsthoroughPrintallthenews.Condenseitifnecessary.

Frequentlyitisbetterwhenintelligently（聪明的）condensed."

Anotherclassicexampleofhisinfluenceoccurredwhen;merelymonthsafter

headvocatedpoliticalassassination4音杀）inaneditorial,AmericanPresident

McKinleywasassassinated.

赫斯特和普利策的报纸都开始刊登有关古巴起义的耸人听闻的故事。这些故事极大地

夸大了西班牙部队的行为：他们把古巴人关进集中营，迫使他们在恶劣的条件下生活，饱

William,sinterestsledhimtofollowinhisfather/sfootsteps,inspiringhimto

enterintopolitics.HewaselectedtotheU.S.Congressasasenatorrepresenting

theStateofNewYorkin1902andserveduntil1907.Hewasacandidateforthe

officeofmayorofNewYorkCityandgovernorofNewYorkState,butfailedinboth

oftheseattempts.

WhilehoneymooninginEuropeafterhismarriagetoMillicentWilsonin1903,

heexpandedhispublishingempirewithMotorMagazine.TheHearstCorporation

grewtocompriseatotalof12newspapers,includingtheExaminer,and25

magazines,includingCosmopolitan.Notsatisfiedwithjusthispublishing

enterprises,heexpandedhisbusinessoperationsintoradio,andlaterproduced
