reckonsClareMcAndrew,founderofArtsEconomics,aresearchfirm-doublethe

figurefiveyearsearlier.Sincethenitmayhavecomedownto$50billion.Butthe

marketgeneratesinterestfarbeyonditssizebecauseitbringstogethergreatwealth,

enormousegos,greed,passionandcontroversyinawaymatchedbyfewother

industries.

IntheweeksandmonthsthatfollowedMrHirst'ssale,spendingofanysort

becamedeeplyunfashionable,especiallyinNewYork,wherethebail-outofthe

bankscoincidedwiththelossofthousandsofjobsandthefinancialdemiseofmany

art-buyinginvestors.Intheartworldthatmeantcollectorsstayedawayfromgalleries

andsalerooms.Salesofcontemporaryartfellbytwo-thirds,andinthemost
