SCOPE
1.1Purpose.Thepurposeofthistestisasfollows:
Toverifythatmarkingsorcolorcodingwillnotbecomeillegibleordiscoloredontheparts(includingprintedwiringboards)whensubjectedtosolventsandprocessesnormallyusedtocleansolderflux,fingerprints,andothercontaminantsfromprinted-wiringandterminal-boardassemblies,etc.
Toverifythatcomponentprotectivecoating,encapsulationmaterialandsleevematerialresistancearenotdegradedtothepointwhereelectricalormechanicalintegrityisdisturbedwhensubjectedtosolventsandprocessesnormallyusedtocleansolderflux,fingerprints,andothercontaminantsfromprintedwiringandterminalboardassemblies,etc.
Formulationofsolvents.Theformulationofsolventsisconsideredtypicalandrepresentativeofthesolventsusedinprintedwiringassemblyprocessingofelectroniccomponents.Processingconditionsarerepresentativeofprocessesusedforprintedwiringassembly.
Checksforconflicts.Whenthistestisreferenced,careshouldbeexercisedtoassurethatconflictingrequirements,asfarasthepropertiesofthespecifiedfinishesandmarkingsareconcerned,arenotinvoked.

GENERALREQUIREMENTS
Materials
Solventsolutions.Thesolventsolutionsusedinthistestshallconsistofthefollowing(seetableIforsummary).

typeI,orthreepartsbyvolumeofamixtureof80percentbyvolumeofkeroseneand20percentbyvolumeethylbenzene.
Aterpenedefluxerconsistingofaminimumof90percentd-limoneneand10percentsurfactant.1/

Solventsolutions,safetyaspects.Solventsolutionslistedin4.1.1athrough4.1.1dexhibitsomepotentialforhealthandsafetyhazards.Safetyprecautionsaslistedintheappropriatemanufacturersmaterialsafetydatasheetshallbeobserved.
Vessel.Thevesselforsolventimmersionshallbeacontainermadeofnon-reactivematerialandofsufficientsizetopermitcompleteimmersionofthespecimensinthesolventsolutionsspecifiedin4.1.1.
Brush.Thebrushshallbeabrushwithahandlemadeofanonreactivematerial.Thebrushshallhavethreelongrowsofhardbristles,thefreeendsofwhichshallliesubstantiallyinthesameplane.Thebrushshallbeusedexclusivelywithasinglesolventandwhenthereisanyevidenceofsoftening,bending,wear,orlossofbristles,itshallbediscarded.

Procedure
Groups.Thespecimenssubjectedtothistestshallbedividedintofourgroupsofapproximatelyequalsize.
Thefirstgroupshallbeexposedtothesolutionspecifiedin4.1.1a.
Thesolutionshallbemaintainedatatemperatureof25C±5C.Thespecimensshallbecompletelyimmersedfor3minutes+0.5,-0minutesinthespecifiedsolutioncontainedinthevesselspecifiedin4.1.2.Immediatelyfollowingimmersion,eachspecimenshallbetestedasfollows:Thebristleportionofthebrush,specifiedin4.1.3,shallbedippedinthesolutionuntilwettedandthespecimenshallbebrushedwithnormalhandpressure(approximately2to3ounceforceappliednormaltothesurface)fortenstrokesontheportionofthespecimenwheremarkinghasbeenapplied.Thebrushstrokeshallbedirectedinaforwarddirectionacrossthesurfaceofthespecimenbeingtested.Immediatelyafterbrushing,theprocedureshallberepeatedtwomoretimes,foratotalofthreeimmersions,followedbybrushing.Aftercompletionofthethirdimmersionandbrushing,thespecimensshallbeair-blowndry.Thespecimensshallbeinspectedinaccordancewith5.2.1and
5.2.2todeterminetheextent,ifany,ofdeteriorationthathasoccurred.

5.2.2todeterminetheextent,ifany,ofdeteriorationthathasoccurred.
Optionalexposureprocedureforthethirdgroup.Thetestspecimensshallbelocatedonatestsurfaceofknownareawhichislocated6±1inches(15±2.5centimeters)belowaspraynozzlewhichdischarges.16±.005gpm(0.62±0.02litersperminute)ofsolutionperin2(6.5squarecentimeters)ofsurfaceareaatapressureof20±5lbs/in2(138±34kilopascal).Thesolventshallbeheldatatemperaturerangeof63Cto70C.Thespecimensshallbesubjectedtothissprayforaperiodof10minutes.Aftercompletionofthesprayexposure,thespecimensshallbethoroughlyrinsedinwaterandallsurfacesair-blowndryandinspectedinaccordancewith5.2.1and5.2.2todeterminetheextent,ifany,ofdeteriorationthathasoccurred.Ifthisoptionalprocedureisspecified,brushingofthesamplesinthethirdgroupisnotrequired.Ifaconflictarisesfromtheuseofthesprayoption,thebrushmethodof4.2.1dshallbeusedastherefereeprocedure.Themeasurementsshowninparenthesesarenotexactequivalentsandareshownforconvenienceonly.
Immersiontestforcomponentswithmarkingprotectedbyasleevematerial.Componentswithaprotectivesleeveshallbedividedintofourgroupsasspecifiedin4.2.1,andeachgroupshallbesubjectedtotestingusingthesolutiondefinedforthatgroup.Eachsolutionshallbemaintainedatatemperatureof25C±5C,exceptthesolutionin4.1.1cshallbemaintainedatatemperatureof63Cto70C.Thespecimensshallbecompletelyimmersedfor3minutes+.5,-0minutesinthespecifiedsolutioncontainedinthevesselspecifiedin4.1.2.Immediatelyfollowingimmersion,eachspecimenshallbetestedasfollows:Thebristleportionofthebrushspecifiedin4.1.3shallbedippedinthesolutionuntilwettedandthespecimenshallbebrushedwithnormalhandpressure(approximately2to3ounceforceappliednormaltothesurface)fortenstrokesonthesleevedirectlyabovetheareaofthemarking.Immediatelyafterbrushing,theprocedureshallberepeatedtwomoretimesforatotalofthreeimmersionsfollowedbybrushing.Thebrushstrokeshallbedirectedinaforwarddirectionacrossthesleeveareaabovethemarking.Aftercompletionofthethirdimmersionandbrushing,thespecimensshallbeair-blowndry.Thespecimensshallbeinspectedinaccordancewith5.2.1and5.2.2todeterminetheextent,ifany,ofdeteriorationthathasoccurred,includingthesleeve.
OpenconstructionpartsandpartsnotintendedforPCBmounting.Partsofopenconstructionwhicharesusceptibletointernaldamagebyimmersioninsolventsandpartsnotintendedformountingonprintedcircuitboards,shallbedividedintofourgroupsasspecifiedin4.2.1,andeachgroupshallbesubjectedtotestingusingthesolutiondefinedforthatgroup.Eachsolutionshallbemaintainedatatemperatureof25C±5C,exceptforthesolutionin4.1.1c,whichshallbemaintainedatatemperaturerangeof63Cto70C,andshallbecontainedinthevesselspecifiedin4.1.2.Eachgroupshallbetestedasfollows:Thebristleportionofthebrushspecifiedin4.1.3shallbeimmersedintherespectivesolutionforeachgroupuntilwetted.Themarkingareaofthespecimentobetestedshallthenbeimmediatelybrushedwithnormalhandpressure(approximately2to3ounceforceappliednormaltothesurface)fortenstrokesontheportionofthespecimenwheremarkinghasbeenapplied(testareanottoexceedone-halfinchsquare).Thebrushstrokeshallbedirectedinaforwarddirectionacrossthemarkedsurface.Thistestshallberepeatedtwiceforatotalofthreetimesforeachspecimen.Thespecimensshallthenbeinspectedinaccordancewith5.2.1and5.2.2todeterminetheextentofdeterioration,ifany.
